C580

Well I finally took the plunge and ordered a new Streetpilot C580 from Amazon.com for $356.95 shipped! I did loads of research and asked many questions here and almost bought the C550 but realized for about $20.00 more I could have the C580 with MSN direct for a full year for free.. Not only that but you can buy MSN direct after the free year runs out for $129.95 for life or if I desired to do so for $50.00 per year. Hopefully I made the right choice.. Look forward to hearing from current C580 users. If the maps aren't current I believe I should be able to get the most current maps for free too.. Thanx for all the opinions rendered here at this forum!

PS: My faithful i3 will be my wife's gps. Great little unit too!

Excellent price. Costco has

Excellent price. Costco has the 580 for $349 but you have to pay shipping and handling. Although, advantage of Costco (if you have a membership) is that you can return it after even 3 or 4 years and get your money back. Incredible return policy.

Hi Gerry, Yes that Costco

Hi Gerry,
Yes that Costco return policy is good but I don't want to be a member there so the deal I got worked for me. Personally I doubt I would return a product I used for years for a refund. You would think Costco would go bankrupt with a policy like that..

I also just took advantage

I also just took advantage of the COSTCO C580 offer. The GPS was delivered about a week ago and it appears to be everything I wanted. The "instruction manual" seems to leave a little to be desired. For example, the presence of an SD expansion slot is shown, but there seems to be no info whatsoever about the use of it. Anyone know the allowable SD capacities? Can anyone explain the use of the SD slot. for example, i will be visiting Florida next month. Would it be possible for me to save the Florida specific locations to the SD card? Would appreciate whatever info is available.

SD Card Useage

Joel - I appreciate the prompt reply, but afraid that I still need some handholding. What method would you suggest to save locations to the SD card?
For anyone visiting someplace on discrete occasions I imagine it would make sense to only load the appropriate sites when visiting. The SD card seems ideal - if only I knew how to do it.

SD card

You can load custom poi files to your SD card.
Whether you make them yourself or download a file from the web. Just remember what folder you put them in. It'll come in handy.

You insert the sd card, connect gpsr to computer, WAIT for it to be recognized as a mass storage device.

If using a MAC, please say so, otherwise the following pertain to WINDOWS.

(you can go to my computer, then look for/wait for GARMIN to appear with a drive letter, you will also get another for the SD card.)

start poi loader, click next, WAIT for the device to show up, then select the appropriate drive that was assigned to the installed SD card.

The rest should be relatively easy, point poi loader to the folder that contains the poi you want to load.

As far as size...does it really matter?
Buy the least expensive one you find on sale, one or two GB will do you just fine.

i hope u enjoy the c580 i

i hope u enjoy the c580 i know i sure have used and enjoyed my c530.

You will love it!

Not a day has gone by since the purchase of my 580 that I have regretted making the purchase. You have purchased it for a good deal less than I did (by design I am an early-adopter, so I always pay more) which makes it an even better deal!

Hey Bob long time no see! How are you doing these days? Looking forward to getting my new gps and I have gotten positive remarks so far. Oddly enough my i3 acted up this morning and shut itself down for no reason. I couldn't get it to turn on until I removed the batteries and power plug then reinstalled and it started up ok.. Strange! Perhaps my i3 is jealous of my incoming C580?? As much as I like the Nuvi series I felt the C580 gave me the most bang for my buck. I'll be sure to post after I get it and use it for a little while.

Take Care,
Ray
