Free map updates - How did we fare?

I did a non-scientific survey of postings on this forum relating to obtaining a free update of maps for the Garmin GPS models. I was surprised at the end result, and I wanted to share it with the rest of the group.

I read posts from 53 members, representing 56 separate GPSr units needing update to City Navigator North America NT 2008 maps. Here are the results:

  • Submitted via email - 17 approved first try.
  • Submitted via phone - 26 approved first try.
  • Resubmitted after denial - 8 approved.
  • Total number of free updates - 52.
  • Updates offerred at 1/2 price - 2
  • Updates denied completely - 2
  • Nuvi models total - 43
  • Nuvi models rejected first try - 6
  • Nuvi models approved on 2nd try - 4.
  • Nuvi models paid 1/2 price - 2
  • Zumo models total - 3
  • Zumo models approved - 2
  • Zumo models rejected - paid full price -1
  • StreetPilot 'C' series - total - 9
  • 'C' Series approved on 1st try - 6
  • 'C' Series approved on 2nd try - 3
  • 'C' Series rejected after 2 tries - 0
  • Streetpilot I3 models total - 1, rejected

So in summary, out of 56 chances to do the right thing, Garmin eventually got it right 52 times. Only 4 users had to pay or gave up completely. It's clear that the current policy is just causing bad public relations, without really saving Garmin any significant expense.

BTW, in the few cases where the tech support representative was named, here are the results:
Approved without hassle: Lori, John, Joe, Julie, Ryan, Gerald, Tim.
Approved after appealing to supervisor: Tranika
Rejected: Nathan, Joshua, Thomas.

Garmintech, I'm actually having quite a few issues trying to install the 2008 map update to my Nuvi. I'm really impressed by your knowledge & "know how".

Would it be possible for me to call and get your assistance?

Awaiting Upgrade

I have the nuvi 660 and have requested the upgrade also. I have noticed many discrepancy with my maps missing streets

Batting zero

I spoke w/a tech and was told no free map upgrades because the Garmin Streetpilot I5 has been discontinued. I also sent an e-mail and was told the same. I purchased my Garmin 05-14-07 and love it. I would be interested to know if anyone else w/discontinued models got the update free or even for half price.

2008 update for NUVI 370

I received the update with no hassle. I registered the product and then emailed product support saying that I understood that I was entitled to a free upgrade. this was their response:(email response on 8/17 and I received the DVD yesterday 8/24)

Garmin Response

I will be happy to assist you with this. Based on the unit you have purchased and the registration date of this unit, you are eligible for a free update to the 2008 City Navigator North America NT maps.

I will place the order for you if the address on your account is the address to which you would like the update shipped. If you wish to use a different shipping address, please email that address back to me and we will get the DVD shipped out as they become available. The updates are being shipped via UPS Ground. If you live in Canada, extra charges may apply.

Please note that this is a DVD so you will need a DVD drive. You will also need internet access in order to update this unit. Other requirements are displayed on our website.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this email, please feel free to email me back.

free map upgrade ordering online NOW AVAILABLE

I registered my nuvi660 on mygarmin today and after entering my serial number and registration code I was offered a free upgrade. I submitted my address and confirmation page saying my order had been processed. No hassle with talking to tech support or faxing receipt. Just do it online. Hopefully mine will come in the mail in a few days. Any idea if the map update will delete my favorites (i.e. waypoints) that I have stored on my garmin?

.

It probably will delete your Favorites. Copy the current.gpx file from your nuvi to your computer first. Then copy it back when you are done.

I didn't get an order number or confirmation email yet... so we'll see what happens!!

I was just able to do the same thing for my Nuvi 350 that I purchased at the end of June. It was very simple, we will see how the update itself goes.

map update

I purchased my garmin c530n last week and after finding this website and reading the post i decided to try and get a free map update from Garmin.
Initially i was told that i would have to purchase it at full price @ $70.00
After some talking I was able to get the tech support person to offer it to me at a reduced price of $35.00.
I asked to speak with a supervisor and aftger a few minutes of waiting i was told that i would recieve the map update at no charge. I would recieve it in the mail in a couple of weeks.
A side point.
I was told that the entire map update will not fit on the street pilot models.
You have to choose either United States lower 48 OR Canada and Alaska.
Because of this Garmin has reduced the cost of the Street pilot models.Which by the sounds of what the tech support person told me
is not much of a reduction.I will say that the Tech support person was very friendly and professional.
I cant remember his name exactly.

This is true, however, if you have a card/reader writer you can transfer Alaska and Canada or lower 48 to the SD card using Map Install that comes with the update. Then insert the SD card into your unit and have all of the maps available to you. This, of course, requires you to have a card reader/writer and an SD card (I used 512m for Alaska & Canada - easily fits). I have a c330, but I would think this would work for you as well. Have fun...

Great idea, but I didn't have a need for these. That being said, I could go back and load them as there's still plenty of room on my card. Now, if I could only find out how a couple of folks on this site claim they can load POI's to their SD card for the c330 - tried with no luck, h-m-m-m....

Thanks redbarber!!

Yes!! Garmin is sending me my map update for free - CNNA 2008. Ryan, Garmin tech, sent me a nice email and just asked that I send him a copy of the receipt. I was a little reluctant since the c330 was a wedding gift with no gift receipt but . . . when I checked for a new restaurant in my neighborhood via the link you (redbarber) gave me to the 2008 mapsource viewer . . . well, I'll be . . . it's there. I was impressed and felt it was worth the awkwardness to ask my wife's grandmother for the receipt. wink So, I sent it to Ryan, Garmin tech, and now I'm just waiting for my DVD to come in the mail.

By the way, for your stats - I sent three emails and one phone call. After, receiving a no from both one email and one call, I gave up. However, Ryan replied on Friday with a yes.

I can understand their position on the c330 and I also appreciate their willingness to compromise, 1/2 off (i.e., phone call with Bobby, Garmin tech). But, I especially appreciate for free.

Anyone have any experience using gps for hiking? Next spring, I'd like to buy a gps with topographic maps. I've heard a couple good reviews on Garmin's Rino 530. Any opinions?

Thanks again redbarber! Oh, and thanks Ryan.

Map Update

Bought 2 Streetpilot c330 units 6/26/07 and registered both on MyGarmin. Called tech support to check on 2008 map update and was approved for free update(s) in minutes. I haven't seen it yet but was told that due to backlog it would arrive by September. I talked to Ryan who handled everything quickly and professionally.

Map update

Hi, everyone,

Well, I wasn't one of the "lucky ones" who got their update free of charge. I talked to "Keith" at Garmin. He explained that the cutoff for free updates was sometime in May. I had registered my Nuvi on February 9th, so I was offered the product at 50%. Better than nuthin', I suppose.

Miki

Got mine in the mail

Got the yes on Aug 23 and was told they were out of stock, so I was expecting a long long wait. It arrived at my door (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) Aug 31. Just installed without a hitch. I didn't time the install as I did it at work (I don't run Windows at home)

Jamie

All happy here

DVD came in the mail last week, installed perfectly and no problems. I bought my C340 at the end of June and had no difficulty getting the free update. It forgot most of my settings and favorites, which was no biggie, other than it remembered I was using Emily, which surprised me.

web site charges

I registered my 370 and it wants to charge me for the 2008 when I tried to update on their site.

I later called the tech and gave them the SN# and I got 2008 map for free.

This has been a HUGE help for the techs! You may find that you registered and you can not get it, but that is beecause they are tracking serial numbers. If the unit was built way back, you may have to send proof of purchase, but for the most part, this saves you time and effort, and saves me from trying to decipher the info so that you and I understand it.

You'll be getting your mapping disk (DVD) in a week or so.

Just to update on this. I placed the online order on Aug 24 and still have not seen any DVD in the mail. Anyone had success with this?

how do we get free map update?

i too have c330 garmin that i bought just one month before. How do we update the maps on it for free?

.

What date did you purchase it?
What version of the maps are installed on it currently?

If you have v8 instead of v2008, then you can do one of the following.

Either log into your myGarmin account and click on Map Updates and see if you are eligible.

Or call Garmin and ask them if you are eligible.

Great Info

I could not find my receipt but registered my Nuvi with a purchase date in june 2007 and was approved without question.

I called up Garmin and asked them about my 2008 update since i bought my 350 on april 19. he talked to the supervisor and said he will send me the update for free. The only problem is that garmin is back ordered on the 2008 maps so i dont know when i will receive the update.

Same as me. Ive had my c530 for 9 days. Called GT today and was told my unit didn't qualify for a free update. Told him (Russ) that it was registered and I just got it. Told me I could get a update for a reduced price. Told him it wasn't right as I had just purchased this and it was out of date on the maps. I then asked to talk to a supervisor and was then placed on hold for 5 mins. When he came back (Russ, not a supervisor) he said if I fax them a copy of my receipt that he would see if he could get me approved for a free update. Will be faxing that over this afternoon. I also asked for a copy of Map source and was told they would send that as well if I was approved for the updated map.

Guess I will have to see what happens. I don't really think they go and ask a supervisor. I feel they just go thru the motions trying to get you to pay for it. Total time on the phone with Garmin, 17 mins including the wait time to talk to tech and being placed on hold. I expected it to take a lot longer after reading other posts.

Why did you have to send in your receipt. Did you register online? All this could be done on their site; you don't have to talk to anyone. If you qualify then everything is ready for you online.
