Did you get a free update to 2008 maps?

Since so many have reported inconsistancies with Garmin's map update process, I was just curious. Please respond to this thread if you have an experience (either positive or negative) with getting the latest map version for your Garmin GPSr. Please include:

  • Your GPSr model
  • When you bought it
  • Did you get your upgrade free?
  • What did you have to do to get it free?
  • If you were unable to obtain a free update, what was the reason given?
  • Do you know who you dealt with at Garmin

I would like to collect as much info as possible, for use in drafting a letter to Garmin management about their screwy policy.
Here is my info:

  • Model: Zumo 450
  • Purchased 6/22/07
  • Got free upgrade after single phone call to tech support.
  • All I had to do was email a copy of my sales receipt.
  • I spoke with Ryan N. at Tech Support.

Here is my daughter's experience:

  • Streetpilot C530
  • Purchased 7/9/07
  • Refused free update via email from Nathan T. at tech support.
  • Reason given, C530 is not eligible for free update.
  • I called support, spoke with Tranika. She initially said no free update for C530, offerred 1/2 price deal. After I requested to speak with her manager, she said they were making an exception for me and sending a free update.

So, how did it go for the rest of you?

Free update

Nuvi 660
Purchased 6/3/07
Free update received in about 2-3 weeks.
I opened a ticket on Garmin's website on 7/18. I requested a map upate since I had purchased my 660 in June. I was never asked the serial number or to provide a dated sales receipt. I did register my unit with Garmin within a day or two of purchasing - so I guess they must have had a way to verify my eligibility for the free update based on the units registration info.
I received an upgrade confirmaion email within 24 hours from Pete S - Product Support Specialist, Automotive Team, Garmin International

Barry - Nuvi 660 and 2 Nuvi 765's

I got Fee Update

Model: nuvi 360
Purchased April,2007
Got free upgrade after send e-mail to tech support.
All I had to do was email a copy of my sales receipt.

I've gotten approval

Model: Nuvi 660
Purchase date: 5/21/07
Purchased from: BuyDig

I 1st called customer service to get it registered and get the upgrade. I got a registration code after sending a copy of my order confirmation but was told to register online and to order the free upgrade online.

There was no option to get the free map upgrade online so I tried to email them. The link for product supports email threw me in a loop and was able to get an email address from this site. After emailing them, I got an email response from Scott S stating he had put an order in for the free map upgrade but it would not ship because they were out of stock.

It's here!!

I was sitting here at home working when I see the brown truck pulling in. I'm like, what the heck is being dropped off from UPS?? Everything I ordered in the last week was being shipped FedEx...

To make a long story short. It was the Garmin Map Update 2008 that was on back order last week!!

THANK YOU GARMIN and the helpful folks on this site!!!

Now, I'm just waiting for my new HD DVD player. I'll be good for a while with that until I can get my hands on a Nintendo Wii. Anyone know where I can get a Wii for the suggested retail of $249?? I don't wanna get ripped off with all the extra junk or on eBay.

Garmin StreetPilot

Garmin StreetPilot c330
Purchased 8/19
Called today to try and get the free update and was told no
The reason i was given was that first, it doesnt come included with the gps cause the internal memory of the GPS can't hold the new update. In other words, they would have to give away new maps and a SD memory card. Than he started to tell me that no one is given free updates, i have to pay the $59.99 for it.

Didnt get one

i lost my receipt and have emailed with them (giving my serial numbers and as much info as i can) and they don't seem to want to let me get any updates for any of my gps systems... i have a garmin nuvi 350, and a garmin etrex legend Cx i had bought both of them recently one around july 15th or so and one on august 2nd don't remember the exact date as i bought it from where i work so i cant go off of my transactions as i buy alot of stuff from there :/

1 free, 1 not

Purchased 7/22/07
Communicated with Garmin two days after purchase. Gave free update upon first email to Tech Support without question, and verified with phone call to Tech Support. Had to supply purchase receipt for verification. Received within a week.

Street Pilot c330
Purchased 8/12/07
Communicated with Garmin 1 day after purchase. Was only given option to do 1/2 price upgrade. Did not ask for receipt for verification. Received in two days.

2008 update for Nuvi 370 purchased 07/21/07

I received the update with no hassle. I registered the product and then emailed product support saying that I understood that I was entitled to a free upgrade. this was their response:(email response on 8/17 and I received the DVD yesterday 8/24)

Garmin Response

I will be happy to assist you with this. Based on the unit you have purchased and the registration date of this unit, you are eligible for a free update to the 2008 City Navigator North America NT maps.

I will place the order for you if the address on your account is the address to which you would like the update shipped. If you wish to use a different shipping address, please email that address back to me and we will get the DVD shipped out as they become available. The updates are being shipped via UPS Ground. If you live in Canada, extra charges may apply.

Please note that this is a DVD so you will need a DVD drive. You will also need internet access in order to update this unit. Other requirements are displayed on our website.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this email, please feel free to email me back.

Profiling! Stereotypes! Injustice! Speaking as a former Red Headed Step-Child, I need to warn you that we are no longer going to allow ourselves to be the standard by which dis-respect is measured. I would hate to have to report you to the N.A.A.R.H.S.*, you don't EVEN want that kind of trouble.

How about C530?

Will you get a free update if you have C530?

Free update

please help, this is the response I got from garmin:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International,

I will be happy to help you with this. I see you have registered the unit in January of this year. The new mapping update did not come out until August. The map was not outdated at your time of purchase.

The cutoff date for free map

The cutoff date for free map upgrades was May 1, 2007 per a memo sent out by Garmin Management

NickJr Nuvi 3597LMT

.

alofficial, as previously stated, you are not eligible for a free map update. Your purchase date was nowhere close to the release of the new maps. Just for clarification, the free map update policy is in place to provide the map update to people who bought the maps or their unit with the old maps AFTER the release of the new maps. Nothing more nothing less.

The only help we can give you is that if you want the updated maps you must purchase them. I don't think Garmin's response was nasty at all. It seemed very polite and helpful.

You can get the update for $53.64 from here.

Sorry about your problems, however, the DVD only un-locks for a specific unit. Can't do it for another unit...

Get Update Online

you can just register your product on mygarmin and they will inform you if you are eligible for a free updated to the 2008 maps. You don't need to call in and send any receipt. I believe this online update system started on August 23.

Free Update

Got my Nuvi 660 in May from Costco for a hell of a price. Registered it on Garmin's site. After seeing the updated maps at Best Buy I checked Garmin's site and ordered my free map update. Hopefully here in a few days.

Can Garmin map updates work on multiple GPS units?

Our family has a total of 4 Garmin StreetPilot GPS units (c530's) with North America NT v8. If I buy an update DVD to v2008, can I use it to update them all, or only one of the GPs units? Thanks!

Only one... You have to

Only one... You have to purchase 4 of them to update all of your GPSR..

Can C530 even be upgraded at all?

Got my C530 in Dec 2006 as a Christmas gift.

Try to get an upgrade and was told it was not possible to do it on C530 as there is not enough system memory. I'll have to load Canada or US portions of the map depends on where I want to go!

Asked whether can I use the extra memory from the memory slot and was told that only certain pre-programmed SD card can be used. Of course, the new map would not be available for such purpose.

So, left with a 7 month, still in warranty C530, an "outdated" map and cannot do anything about it.

I am in Canada where new roads seemed to be just too much for the older map to handle. Anyone with a C530 has the same issue?

info

Your GPSr model: NUVI 680
When you bought it: July 2007
Did you get your upgrade free?: Yes
What did you have to do to get it free?: Simple call to tech support
If you were unable to obtain a free update, what was the reason given? N/A
Do you know who you dealt with at Garmin: Tech support...

I guess the only beef I had with this process was the fact that if it were not for this site I would not have known to ask for it! BRAVO to the community!

Do a search on this site of above subject and you'll see how I loaded the new NT2008 on my device and SD Card. If it can be done on the c330, I would think you could do it on your c530. This doesn't help you get the maps, but lets you know how it can be done...

Getting the Update: easier than I expected

Sent e-mail to customer support using on-line system. It knew me and my nuvi 370 registration. Just provide mailing address, etc.

In the e-mail indicated that I purchased unit on 5/22/2007, offered to send a verification of delivery, and wondered if I was eligible for the free map update. Got back an e-mail stating the release would not be available until 8/27/07. Received the disk in the mail yesterday. Very easy operation. Have not installed. Waiting to get a consensus of the success of the update.

Yes

I just called and asked for it politely. The tech support guy sent it right out. Had it in three days! Garmin's tech support staff are the best I dealt with in a long time. Those guys are the model for the rest to follow! I also think the management has a good balance between customers and their business objectives which is not seen often today.

Free Map Upgrade -

* Your GPSr model: Nuvi 660
* When you bought it: May 14, 1970
* Did you get your upgrade free?: Yes (2 tries)
* What did you have to do to get it free?: 2 email requests: (1) reply from Joey R on 7/24/07 said not eligible for a free map upgrade and gave me the URL for the store. (2) reply from Becky J on 7/30/07 said I did qualify for a free upgrade and I received it in about a week.

- I sent an email to Becky J. telling her I received the upgrade and thanked her for her time and effort. Doesn't hurt to say "Thanks" when someone takes care of you.

........Garmin StreetPilot c550 / Nüvi 765...........

Errr, I got one but used nefarious means.

First I registered my Nuvi 350 online with a made up date less than two months ago. Then I e-mailed Garmin with a copy and paste of my Amazon order into MS Word. However, Word let me change some of the dates around so that I moved my purchase date up a couple of months. Sent in the altered doc and got a nice letter back and recieved my free upgrade today. (Make sure revisions is turned off!)
Please don't rat me out! I'm a good boy, I am and it was only a couple of months out...

You can load with the c530

I have a c530. Purchased the v2008 maps and loaded the lower 48 states to the GPSr. Inserted an SD card into a separate card reader and used MapInstall (loaded on PC with v2008, but can also use Mapsource) to select the Canadian Provinces, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii to download to my SD card. With SD card in place, I have full capability.

Received email 10pm that night, could get it for half price (34.50). Sent note with order information, reply said he couldn't credit an order place before his discount email. I replied that wasn't fair and I have read (here) about people getting it for free with no problems. Finnaly, two weeks later got an email saying he would credit me the $34.
