Nuvi 200 - can I erase the map on it?

Make sure Garmin Lock is turned of first!!!!!

You can delete the gmapprom.img file from the nuvi, copy the Canada img from the DVD. I don't remember the name, but it is about 400MB. Then rename the file you copied to gmapprom.img. You will also need the gmapprom.unl (I think that is the name) file to unlock the map.

Of course you can just run the installation program, select the Canada map and let the software do it for you.

I can provide better directions after I get home

The important thing is to have Garmin Lock turned off so you can try again if the installation fails. There is a software bug that will prevent you from entering your PIN if the .img file is corrupted or you don't have the unlock file.

Is yours a new unit with 2008 maps, or does it have V8 maps?

It has the maps that came preloaded on it 2008 maps - (continental US, Hawaii and Puerto Rico) No Canada.

I purchased the City Navigator North America NT v8.

That sounds backwards, NTv8 came out before the 2008 maps.

Make a backup copy of the gmapprom.img and gmapprom.unl files from your nuvi in case you want to go back to 2008 maps.

You should be able to run the installation program and let it do the installation. If not,

Delete both gmapprom files from the nuvi

The DVD should have 3 image files

gmappromA.img A for all
gmappromL.img L for lower (48 states)
gmappromU.img U for upper (Canada and border)

Copy the U file to your nuvi and remove the U from the name. You will also need the .unl unlock file, which a Garmin tech created and eMailed to me, since I couldn't run the installation program.

Ok I didn't have my Nuvi 200 with me last night but I have it now and the maps are:

City Navigator North America NT 2008
1 City Navigator Lower 48 States NT 2008

The DVD is for installation and doesn't have any *.img files on it.
