What is the red dot on the satellite map?

On my nuvi when looking at the satellite map there is a grey circle with a red dot on the outside ring. The dot changes position but I cannot figure out what it is. What does that dot represent?
I've seen that also on my nuvi 650
In the Appendix in the manual I have for the 650, it says the red-dot is the direction of travel. I've tried to watch it while I walk around but you really need to be driving somewhere. Of course, if you're driving, it's really hard to see that dot and not cause an accident. :+)

In order for the unit to respond, you need to be going a minimum of 2.8 MPH. Not fast, but hard to walk that fast, watch the GPS and not bump your nose.
