Updating maps to v2008 on c530

Just received my disk from Provantage and proceeded to update my c530. Was given the choice between Lower 48 states and Alaska, Canada, and adjoining states. Confirmed this was due to memory capacity on c530.

What I did was load the 48 states to the c530, and then with the MapInstall, I chose to load Alaska and each of the provinces to my SD card. (Only took 82mb on my 1 gig card). Checking my maps on the c530, It lists two subgroups under v2008, "lower states" and Alaska, province 1, etc grouped together. Seems to work fine.

Is there any disadvantage to this setup? Surprisingly Garmin tech did not suggest this method, only suggested to replace maps. I assume this would work with the c3xx series also. Therefore you can get the entire North America on the GPSr.

When I used the upgrade, the MapInstall program loaded. I used this to load the maps. Not sure if it would work with the c330, but would like to know the results.

I updated my c330 and my option was either lower 48 or Canada and border states to Canada as you said. No option for any other configuration. However, I do not have a SD card because according to the manual it's for Garmin maps. h-m-m-m-m this would seem to qualify. Guess I could go buy a SD card and try to do that, but am hesitant. Would hope somebody on the site might have tried this with a c330. If not, I may bite the bullet and try it. Maybe the Garmin Tech might advise us as there are so many owners of c330. Or, all else fails, I could e-mail Tech Support again to see if I can get a definative answer. Had done so, but that question was ignored, h-m-m-m?

Updating the C530

If the original set of maps were loaded onto the 530 completely, why can't the update be loaded completely? There can't be so many new roads. How is it that new C530's are loaded completely.
Also, if I choose to load the lower 48 states now and later choose to travel to Canada can I then load Canada for my trip and then reload the 48 upon return?

Tom

V2008 map is large than the previous verison. So V2008 cannot completely fit on some Garmin GPS with small memory.

Yes you can change the map from lower 48 to canada by using the V2008 map DVD

You can, however

You can load them separately, however the option I chose i.e. load the lower 48 into the GPSr and then go back and use the MapInstall program (loaded on my PC by the installer) to load the rest of the data to my SD card seems to allow you to have both at the same time.

Any 7200 or 7500

My upgrade is supposed to come today via UPS. Has anyone on this board upgraded to the new maps using the 7200 or the7500?. From what I,ve been reading Memory seems to be the big thing. My Garmin 7200 has quite a bit of memory how much is left with all the POIs on it is anyones guess. Thanks for any help!

Success

Just uploaded the updated maps to my #7200 and it did not ask me any questions. Once it recognize my unit which took a bit of doing, the only thing it said was {this could take up to 2 hours for completion and that was all it said. I guess the #7200 had enough memory It took about 40 minutes to complete.I took it out and ran a couple of Favorites that used to take me out of the way because it didn,t recognize new roads. This time it recognized the new and quicker roads. So far its great! I,ll know more when my wife and I go down to Charlotte North Carolina for the modular home showing at their convention Center Sept 7,8.

I installed the lower 48 on my nuvi 200 manually because the installer failed. I would like to install the Canada map to my SD card. Can you post the file structure of the map on your SD card so I can try that out? I don't think MapInstall is on my PC. Can I install that from the DVD without it trying to reinstall the map to my nuvi?

1. MapInstall was installed on my PC by the installer. It put a shortcut on my desktop and placed the program in my Garmin Folder.

2. I don't think that the structure on my SD card is any help as it created a single file: gmapsupp.img which comprises all of the map segments I downloaded.

3. I tried an alternative path by using MapSource. Having already loaded the complete v2008 into my PC (part of the installation process), I can select the same Canadian and Alaska map segments (there are 12 in total) and transfer them to the SD card. Below are the segments I loaded and their size. It seems that creates a single map image.

I have noticed all the comments about some of the Garmin units not able to handle both Canada and the US. I haven't noticed if this applies to the C550 (although I might have missed this). Has anyone upgraded the C550 with both countries?

On the nuvi you can turn the detailed map on and off from the Map Info page. I don't know if the c550 has the same option. If you zoom into Montreal and the streets disappear after turning the NT 2008 maps off that would indicate that you do have the Canada maps installed.

Ok the old maps (v.8) was 965.73MBs big. The C530 only had a 1GB worth of space. The new maps (2008) is 1.02GBs big. So as you can see, it wouldn't all fix on the C530.

Memory Available

The nuvi 200 has 1GB (1024MB) of memory. Of that, after formatting, the drive only has 991 MB available.

After considering all the supporting files and basemap, there is only about 940MB available for the detailed maps. The 48 state file is 907MB.

I wonder if I can safely delete (move to my harddrive) the non-English voice and help files to free up space when and if I need to.

Yes, it will be recognized as a USB device, but NOT a mass storage device, supposedly, nor is it MP3 capable. Are you telling us that you see the 1 gig SD card on your computer? What drive does it show? PC or MAC? What operating system? This is a very interesting developement, h-m-m...

Yes, you can safely delete any voice, text, and vehicle files you don't need. As you have stated, I always recommend that people copy them to there computer as a backup.

Be sure you know which files you are looking at and only delete those files.

Thanks

Thanks, MM.

I wasn't sure if there was an index that would cause the GPSr to have a fit if some of the files were missing.

Thanks for the quick reply. I finally found the ICON. I must be blind - it was there all along but I missed it.

However, when I run MapInstall, it aborts telling me "MapInstall could not find any installed products - Please install one or more MapSource products and start MapInstall again". I had copied the 2 "img" files from the DVD to the same folder (Garmin) but it doesn't help. Where am I going wrong???

MapInstall Process

I don't think UNLOCK is the problem.

Can someone give me the detailed process to follow to run MapInstall? Is it just a question of running MapInstall and it is supposed to ask the proper questions. When I read previous topics, it seems that it was very easy for many people to use but when I try it, it aborts.

Should I have the GPS unit connected when I start MapInstall? Should the DVD update be in the drive? Should all the files be in the same folder as the program??

Help!!!

Jean

MapInstall Process

I can only account for the way I did it.
1. I have Mapsource installed so the maps were automatically updated on my PC when I ran the update for my GPS.
2. I ran Mapinstall and it asks for the location i.e. GPSr or SD card (my GPS is connected, or I can install the SD card into a card reader and connect that way). This is the same process as running POI Loader.
3. I then see a large map (I can zoom and move left, right, up and down) of North America.
4. I click on each area that I want to add (each province in Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.
5. The program goes from there and produces the correct map file (you will see the different steps with a timer on the screen).
6. Process will tell me when it is complete.

BTW, you can do the same thing with MapSource, choosing the maps you want, and then transferring to your SD card as above.

--
Garmin StreetPilot c530, Mapsource

MapSource

The DVD I received from GARMIN contained only the Map Updates. When the DVD loaded, it asked me which maps I wanted (Canada or 48 States). It then updated the maps directly on my GPS unit. No maps were updated on my PC.

When I run either MapSource or MapInstall, I get the same message (see previous post).

I guess I will have to live with reloading the maps when I travel to the US!

Thanks

Today I went to Walmart and purchased a card reader/writer and 1gb SD card. On another thread someone said I might be able to load POI's to the SD card, but that DIDN'T work for me. However, I was able to load Alaska and all the Canada maps to the SD card, as above using the SD card and the card reader/writer. I still have to leave the POI's on the unit using the POI loader, cannot get them to be recognized by the c330 when on the SD card. Note: I could not upload the maps while the SD card was in the unit and the c330 was attached to the computer, as Map Install does not see the SD card along with the c330. This appears to be the difference between the c330 and the c530 mkahn has. Otherwise, the steps are the same. Have fun...

My .02 worth - Loading 2008 maps on C530

My daughters update CD came, and she loaded it. When the disk autoran, it prompted her to choose from 'lower 48' or Canada, Alaska, Hawaii. She chose lower 48, and it loaded to her GPSr fine. This process did NOT install Mapinstall or any other Garmin software onto her PC. I wanted to put the rest of the maps onto the SD card, so I went to work...
First, I wanted to get Mapinstall onto the PC. To do this, I

  • Loaded up the 2008 DVD
  • I cancelled the installation
  • I opened 'my computer' and selected to explore the DVD
  • I went to: \windows\msi and ran CNNT2008Update_ENU.msi

This installed Mapinstall onto her PC and put the shortcut on her desktop. However when I ran it, it told me that the 2008 maps were present, but locked. I needed to unlock them, but I could not find her unlock code. She did not remember having one for 2008. I found the unlock code on her GPSr. To do that,

  • I went back to my computer and opened the drive letter for the GPSr (not the SD card)
  • I went to \garmin and found a file ending in .unl
  • I copied that file and pasted it on her C:\ directory
  • I opened that .unl file with notepad.exe
  • There in front of me was the entire unlock code

I copied the code into the clipboard, and went back to Mapinstall. When prompted, I pasted the code in, and voila! the maps were unlocked.
From there, it was a simple matter to select the missing maps and install them on her SD card.

(On a side note, I tested the maps by requesting a route to Saskatoon. Worked fine, but I forgot to cancel it. When my daughter left to go meet her friend, she called me back and asked me why her GPS was trying to make her drive to Canada. I pictured her just following along blindly, and then calling me from Saskatoon, saying she had no idea how she got there. I hurt myself laughing at the image.)

Doubt that can be done with

I posted the following in another area on this site:

c330 2008 map update
I have just finished installing ALL of the Map Update 2008 City Navigator North America NT on my Garmin C330. Once I got my head around what was actually happening, I'd like to outline the procedure.

The 2008 CD installs a program called "MapInstall" on your computer to be used later. Don't forget.

-Your are asked to select between Canada (incl. Alaska & northern border states) OR lower 49 states (incl. Puerto Rico), which replaces the map info in the C330.

-Now then, I have tried BOTH, but which one you load depends on what size of SD card you have, or want to buy. I can tell you that if you load the US/Puerto Rico map, you can put ALL of Canada on a 512 mb SD card. If you load Canada/Alaska, you can get away with a 1-gig SD card, but I had a 2-gig.

-At any rate, after loading your map, you will go to the program "MapInstall". Do NOT put the SD card in your GPS, but make sure it's on & the USB cable attached. I have a Lexar USB SD card reader. When you start MapInstall, you will see both devices. Select the "Removable disk". You then have to select each state or province individually to 'create' your 'secondary' map. It's easier to zoom in a bit on the North American map. When your selection is done, you send the info to the SD card in the USB reader. This takes some time, about 45 minutes to an hour.

When it's finished, remove the SD card from the reader & install it in the slot of the GPS. That's all there is. You do NOT have to select either map. You end up with a seamless North American/Puerto Rico map just like before. You'd never know that you had changed anything. All your previous waypoints etc are there.

Like I said, I loaded Canada to the GPS, then the US to the SD card. I just selected my friend's place in Lake Worth Florida as a destination. I touched "Show Map" before Go! and voila, there it was, 2485.1 km away. I then removed the SD card and the mapping goes away. Stick it in & you're back in business. I don't know why I'd want to take it out from now on. I download the Florida waypoint from MapSource, so your POi's must be on the GPS proper.

Since I only have the Canadian map on the GPS itself, I've got room to store more POi's than this website can provide!

Your map update suggestions work like a charm

Updating Maps C-530 V-2008

Hi, I was wondering if it was possible to just load all the V-2008 maps on the SD card instead of installing the 48 states on the unit and Canada on the SD card and keep the existing maps on the C-530 that came with it. Has anyone treid this? It seems if you can load the Canada Maps on the SD card and they work why can't you load all the maps on them. Anyone's input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Updating Maps to the StreetPilot I5

I had the same experience with the StreetPilot I5.
I assume that I can do the same thing. If I download MapInstall to my computer and update my SD Card with Canada, I hopefully can have all of North America in my GPS. I currently have a 1GB Micro SD Card plugged in and have a number of POI Files from POI-Factory and some that I have also created.
Any info would be appreciated.
