Just looking at a 2026 Honda CR-V (Canada) Touring that no longer has the older Navi. They now have their multi function loaded with Google with Google Maps for Navi (no it is not CarPlay or Android Auto).
Has anyone figured out how to add POIs to the Google maps app directly on this unit?
I believe it will be related to using a Google Play account, but…
Anyone????
Maybe some worthwhile content

Hi John,Those instructions
Hi John,
It seems that HERE lost the contract with Honda, GMC etc and most are now use a BUILT IN version of GOOGLE and Google Maps. If you look at navigation.com you will see Here’s list of vehicles and the updates available which doesn’t include the newer Honda, GMC etc mfgs.
Those instructions are all for the Honda Navi not the newer (2023 - 2026) Google control software and the Google Maps on the Honda’s (as well as Toyota, GMC, etc) multifunction display. It seems that Here and Garmin built in GPS are out on most new cars and that Google Maps is now the built in Navi.
Most of the instructions are for the older systems and if they are newer they require selecting Google menus that no longer exist. I have some 2024 and 2025 instructions to import GPX etc that say to “do this” or “that” and those commands no longer exist.
I want to import my RED LIGHT and SPEED CAMERAS into the system, and I am not doing it one entry at a time! lol
Hopefully someone more Google Maps savvy takes a look and can figure it out!
And when..

I did this one at a time on my 2017 civic...
Then I had to change the battery in my car...
Guess what.. lost every custom entry.. dunno why they didn't put a small battery in place to prevent this, but they didn't...
But of course, your milage may vary

“Supposedly” the Google
“Supposedly” the Google Maps maintains your personal POIs and Entries on the Google Maps in your Google account.
Again…allegedly … lol
We
just got a 2025 Chevy and it has carplay and android auto, as well as 8 years of on star basics which has google maps. It's pretty challenging to operate the vehicle and keep track of all this stuff. My wife's and my phone are fighting to connect to the car using carplay, etc.
And I say this as a joke, but, more and more, someone is going to end up in that scenario with the Coldplay concert sooner or later. And for what? Because driving is supposed to be entertaining, one isn't supposed to have to have hands on the wheel and look at the road. Not in 2026 they're not.
GMC Terrain
A friend bought one and it’s a huge display and it is complicated…same screen I believe.
might be
We have a 17.7" screen which is nice, in addition to the instruments. I think of it as a tablet that controls many of the vehicles functions.
Just imagine, in the old days, a dealer programmed stuff with a computer--then, owners bought software and connected to their own cars, to choose features. Today, owners simply go into the screen or tablet and choose themselves (for example, our car was lowering each time someone got out, and then it raised back to normal--this threw us for a loop but I think I was with the sales mgr and we selected that).
I always wanted to have speedo and tachometer configurable and a screen.
There is Alexa, Google, that one can speak to. Oddly, climate has no shortcut and is simply an icon.
But does a husband or wife really want to see their spouse's text messages coming in and out and how often? That's why I joke about coldplay.
All I want is to navigate somewhere, yet it's connecting, dropping, connecting, dropping, and, my phone can't be used any longer in stand alone when in the car.
Oh no... Just think of all
Oh no... Just think of all the spyware built into these new cars!!!
You can bet your car is transmitting all sorts of telemetry data back to the mothership. In fact, gm (and others) was (were) in some hot water recently about releasing driving data to insurance companies without owner permission.
without a doubt

Updates for the vehicle are sent over the air. I don't know if it's like a laptop or handheld device where you can decide when to install. But I heard if you don't install it, and something happens related to the update, warranty coverage is voided.
Now, knowing what I know, at least in the android space, plenty of updates have knocked devices out of service, and had to be manually touched.
it's not optional if our car has 5G cellular wireless or not, it does. What's optional is whether or not it can be used as a hotspot. The car uses it. I can see where the car is on a map, and where I am, and the app will tell me how to walk to the car.
Lastly ours only has 10 speakers, not 38 like the Cadillac. I couldn't even find 10 speakers, only 9. 2 things I found were microphones. We can assume they're for bluetooth or On Star, but, are they? How do we know?
Imagine there was a time when people hid microphones and cameras in hotels to see what people were doing. Today, they don't have to, the infrastructure is already there.
When I got my stinger ('22
When I got my stinger ('22 MY) in 2021, salesman adamantly insisted I MUST sign up for the kia connect, even if only to use the trial. I told him I don't have smartphone (while carrying a smartphone in a case). He eventually gave up. In fact, I have very few other apps on the phone besides phone, text and email.
The car does have 4g or 5g connectivity - likely 4g according to the specs in the infotainment manual

No ota vehicle updates. GPS firmware and mapdata updates are via usb flash drive. I'm about 2 years behind on those as well. They do publish some change logs, and new features didn't really appeal much to me. On the first update, I lost the manual screen day/night/auto control. Now it's auto only.
I'd have to verify your statement about loss of warranty coverage for not accepting an OTA. My firewall software (pfsense) released an update about 3 weeks ago. Since then there was a subsequent .1 update. I will probably wait til mid sept before updating anything. Of course the entire OS disk is backed up first so it's possible to revert completely to preupdate state if there's an issue.
Not sure how possible downgrading is with a car's ECU firmware (or any other firmware). ymmv
And now they want you
Subscribe to these features to use them!
So you end up paying for the development of software they're going to include in your car, but to use or otherwise exploit that software, you need to pay a subscription fee, and it seems your hard pressed to get out of it.
Additionally, I've heard auto manufacturers are going to stop including a Carplay & Android Auto so that data becomes theirs so sell.
Personally, I think where you go should be your data to v release. Think of it like HIPAA data.
But then again, I'm a radical on personal privacy.

When we bought a 2011 Buick Enclave, at that time, people were posting instructions on physically removing On Star related hardware, for privacy, tracking purposes.
Today, on a 2025 vehicle, imho it would be completely impossible. There isn't any online DIY hack to remove spying.
I didn't know this, flash forward to early this year, our cars were 2006, 2007, 2011. Both the 2006 and 2011 have black boxes, for some reason, the 2007 that can do 155 mph electronically limited, does not have a black box.
Up to that point (2007), I actually cared what a vehicle's top speed was. Today, I don't. Despite having 420/460 HP/lbs ft, there is no verified source that says what the top speed of our new car is. One says 112 MPH (this makes sense), another 124 mph. I guess as we get older, we start to think differently about what matters.
I just found it funny that VW was one of the first mfgs to prevent owners from working on their own vehicles. This is a prevalent concept today. A person may own something, possess it 99% of the time, but not have the rights to use it if they stop paying the rightful owner. interesting
Reminder…
…I really like the conversations, but this is a post to get help with the Google Play OS using in the latest cars and how to add our incredible POI Factory files such as Tim Hortons, Red Light Cameras and Speed Zones.
Thank you all!
