Speed Zones

Some websites that I have seen suggest that it is possible to create a speed zone for a portion of road and the GPS will warn you if you exceed the speed at any point along the route. Is this possible or can you only set up one point? The reason I ask is there is a Street in my area that has an unushually low speed limit for about 10 blocks. The police have speed traps set up somewhere in those 10 blocks almost every day. Do I need several entries to cover this entire street or is there a way to cover it all with a single entry?

.

You can create a Custom POI file with points on that street and set a proximity and/or speed alert for them. You probably will want a couple of points but if it's only 10 blocks you probably won't need more that a few. You will need to get the coordinates (lat and long) for those points.

Here's a bunch of information from the POI Loader help file.

Also check out the getting started and faqs sections from the links at the top of the page for more information.

POI Loader assumes a .csv file utilizes the following format for each POI (brackets [ ] denote optional text):

Lon,Lat,["]Name[@Alert Speed]["],["][comment]["]

If you include quotes around the name or comment, you can include line breaks in the text.

The following are examples of Custom POIs in the proper format:

-94.81549,38.80390,Bonita

-94.79731,38.81099,Ridgeview@25

-94.74240,38.81952,Heritage Park,Perfect site for a picnic

-94.76416,38.81227,Garmin,"1200 E. 151st Street Olathe,KS 66062 913/397.8300"

POI Loader automatically scans .csv and .gpx data files for speed and proximity alert information.

You can also use Manual mode to specify default speed and proximity alert information as needed.

Speed information can be included in the file name or in the names of individual POIs within the file.

POI Loader determines speed information based on the following information, listed from highest to lowest priority:

Speed information included in the name of the individual Custom POI. For example, a POI named "SpeedZone@30" will have an alert speed of 30 regardless of the speed information specified in Manual mode or in the file name.

POI Loader interprets any numbers in the file name as speed information.

Proximity alert information can be calculated automatically based on speed information. It can also be included in .gpx data files or added in Manual mode.

POI Loader determines proximity alert information based on the following criteria, listed from highest to lowest priority:

Proximity alert information listed for individual POIs in a .gpx file. This information overrides all other proximity alert information.

Proximity alert distance calculated by POI Loader based on speed information in the file name or in individual POI names. This calculation uses the following formula:

Prompt Distance = 36 seconds * Speed.

A default proximity alert distance of 400 meters/0.25 miles if the file name contains the word "redlight."

POI Loader loads all .csv and .gpx data files saved in a particular directory. When creating or downloading Custom POI data files, it is recommended that you save all the data files you want to upload to your device in the same directory.

POI Loader determines whether or not a file contains speed and proximity alert points based on specific criteria. Use the following information to help you create Custom POI files:

If a file name contains a valid speed number or if all records in a file have speed encoded in the name, then all records in the file will include speed and proximity alerts. For example, a data file with the file name "Speed_30" generates speed alerts of 30 mph (or kph, depending on the type of units selected in POI Loader) for each POI in the file.

If the file name contains "redlight", POI Loader assumes all records in the file have proximity alerts with a distance of 400m/0.25 miles.

If a file contains "GATSO," "mobile," "SPECS," "safety," "speed," or "camera," but does not have a speed, POI Loader uses a default alert speed of 0, which means you will always be alerted. You can override this default value by entering the speed in Manual mode.

You can also enter speeds for each POI individually by adding the @ symbol and a number after the name of the POI. For example, a Custom POI named "Ridgeview@25" would create a POI named "Ridgeview" with a 25 mph speed alert.

POI Loader calculates proximity alert distance based on speed. You can enter proximity alert distance for individual Custom POIs in a .gpx file. You can also enter proximity alert distance for all Custom POIs in a data file using Manual mode.

I've got another idea

Don't know if anyones thought of this; The maps know the speeds for all streets. The GPS knows how fast your driving. Have a feature on a GPS that will allways show you the difference between posted speed and your speed. Then have a warning sign if you are going over a certain number.

.

Unfortunately, the map doesn't really know the speed limit for all the streets. It uses average speeds for different categories of roads to calculate the route, but it doesn't specifically know the speed on a certain road (or segment of road).

What I've done is to create a Custom POI file for locations/areas where I know there tends to be speed enforcement or areas that I want to be alerted to be aware of the speed.

I know that on some GPSr

I know that on some GPSr units, They allow you set a max speed limit and if you go past that, it alerts you, that would be nice to have on a garmin.
