Webupdater
kojocran,
What Garmin model do you have? My Nuvi 360 has never been detected by Garmin Webupdater or POI Loader. I have always had to manually launch the software after I connected my Nuvi.

Webupdater never recognizes my nuvi 200 either.
I have to manually run POI Loader after connecting the nuvi.

I have the nuvi 350, but i can swear it used to always just recognise it when plugged it up. I has little gps start symbol @ the bottom corner on the bottom toolbar. But now i plug it and nothing even when i click on it it tells me gps not connected.

USB issues.
A few things:
Try a different USB port; Nuvi 350 does recognize and works with the auto-update feature when working correctly; if you haven't done so do a microsoft re-boot (just re-boot with USB cable unplugged;); make sure cable is clean and snuggly plugged in. I have a lot more tips just let me know if it is still an issue.
What OS are you using?
When did it last work?
could the usb cable be inoperative (they do go bad)?
does anything else work in the usb port in question?

Recognize your Nuvi
That little icon in the bottom right corner was from an application call gStart. That is what allows your PC to 'see' your Nuvi when you plug it into your USB cable. At some point you must have exited that program an unchecked the box for auto-launch on boot-up.
Next time you have POI Loader or WebUpdated 'find device' you should again see that icon in the system tray. Click the icon and set it to automatically launch when you turn on your computer.
This should solve your mystery.
gStart does nothing
gStart has never started on either of my computers. Even when I run gStart manually, then connect the nuvi 200 it does nothing. I have to start POI Loader manually.
gStart does not appear to have any options to configure it.

I never had any luck with
I never had any luck with GStart either with my C530, haven't tried it with my nuvi. I don't see any point in it anyways. Perhaps I am missing the point of GStart

You don't need gStart with the nuvis.
Oh ok, I didn't realize
Oh ok, I didn't realize that, thanks!
What is Gstart for then?

It was designed primarily to manage the USB connections for use with Garmin's Training Center software. It's not needed for WebUpdater or (for most unit to use) POI Loader. As long as you have the proper USB driver installed, the programs will work properly. Now as far as the programs recognizing the unit and starting automatically, you would need to change the AutoPlay settings for the drive on your computer. I, personally, wouldn't want mine to work like that. I always start whichever program I want to run when I want it.
gStart
I, personally, turned off gStart. With Windows XP and the nuvi it is, as MM stated, unneeded.
It did, however, start automatically on my computer prior to my disabling it.
Nuvi 350 recognized fine
I don't have that problem with my Nuvi 350 with latest software. Make sure you have connected your GPS first, and that your computer has acquired it and assigned it a drive (2 if you have an SD card). This usually takes about 15 seconds, and there is a sound ("blump") and you can see the image of the computer connected to your GPS on the GPS screen - if you have a lock, you will need to unlock also. Then start WebUpdater and it should find your GPS. If that fails you can try the "find device" button.
