Anyone travelling near Baltimore be familiar with the alternatives

 

The Key bridge was hit by a very large vessel around 1:30 AM and has essentially been demolished. Hopefully devices will provide suitable alternative routing for travelers. Updates on the event are at numerous sources including, https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/03/26/baltimore....

It will be a long time before this bridge is reopened!

Depending on the design of the replacement it will be 3 to 5 years at a minimum before the route is reestablished. Plan on at least 5 years for construction.

We just had a bridge replaced across a river and it took a year and a half for it to be completed. The bridge is probably 300 feet long.

The srction of the FSK bridge that came down was ~ 1.5 miles long.. spent many a day driving it

Not Just Cars

The port of Baltimore is also a departure point for cruise ships. Anyone planning a departure on Norwegian, Carnival or Royal Caribbean, should check with the cruise line.

Baltimore is also the busiest US port for auto imports, as well as farm & construction equipment. Certainly, a major blow to the economy!

No cruise ships at present stuck in Baltimore

At present they aren’t reporting any stranded cruise ships. What is stranded includes three bulk carriers, one vehicle carrier, three logistics naval vessels, two general cargo ships and one oil chemical tanker. An additional vehicle carrier is in the port but outside the site of the bridge collapse. This list does not include additional tugboats, sailboats and private yachts that are also in a holding pattern as the Port of Baltimore remains closed.

Vessels that are or were headed to Baltimore are being diverted. Depending on the type of vessel and cargo Norfolk and New York are bearing the brunt of the vessels. There are a few headed to Philadelphia.

I just love the attitudes of people. I was reading earlier about a Carnival Ship that was diverted to Norfolk. A couple on board who live in South Carolina (SC) are complaining that the cruise line is getting them (and everyone else) to Baltimore by bus. But this particular couple, who have their personal vehicle in Baltimore then have to drive back to SC, a 7-hour drive. They expect "more" from Carnival Cruise lines!

Some folks figure that "someone" owes them a perfect outcome, all the time, never mind the expense.

That attitude is one reason that customer service is so very high an expense for many companies. Guess who actually pays that cost -- all the other customers.

I lived near DC 'til ~30 years ago. I regularly went to NYC, Boston, and Annapolis. The east side of the Baltimore beltway (with the Key bridge) was of no value for those drives. In real traffic (the folks here in the front range of CO have a strange belief that they have actual traffic here!) the west side of the beltway was worthwhile. The rest of the time it was the I-95 tunnel for practicality.

The east side of the Baltimore beltway was useful if you wanted to be on east side of the Baltimore beltway.

It has been a few years since I have been in the area. Back then hazardous materials and campers with propane tanks were banned from the tunnels under Baltimore Harbor, and had to use the Scott Key bridge. Obviously a new bypass route is required.

You will have to use west loop I-695 before the bridge is rebuilt.

Any affected commuters here?

Maybe not, since no one has commented, but I'm just curious, for those who used to cross this bridge five days a week, what the detours have done to commuting times?

Which nav does it right?

I'm curious among Tesla onboard navigation, Apple cell-phone nav, Google cell-phone nav, and Garmin "traffic-aware" nav, and others, which are showing appropriate detour routes, and which are merrily advising the user to cross a bridge that is no longer there.

I have wifi in the garage, I assume it installed updates before shutting down some timein the last few days

I assume "closed for roadworks" because there isn't "closed for hit by ship"
