Any Overcurrent Protection? (60W Power Converter 110-240V AC to 12V 5A DC Power Adapter)

Would something like this have any over current protection?

The pessimist in me fears that it may overheat and be a hazard.

There is no mention of overcurrent protection but they are emphatic that the maximum power draw is 60 watts. What would concern me is the statement “Frequently returned item. Check the product details and customer reviews to learn more about this item.”

Almost 1/4 of the reviews are negative to some degree.

without

`Without a schematic and list of build components it is impossible to determine what, if any, protection is built-in the device. Based on the reviews and the manufacturer's cautions it sounds as if the components used are capable of providing the maximum current and will fail if over stressed. Personally, I wouldn't buy the cheap device.

UL

I did not see UL approval.

This unit has a circuit breaker

https://www.amazon.com/Koolatron-4333139643-AC-Power-Adapter... But is more expensive than what you are considering. I see someone brought up “UL Approval”. Although desirable, lack of “UL Listed”, shouldn’t be a game changer. Many commodity type items don’t carry “UL Listed” due to the substantial cost of the testing process.

Spend the extra money and

Spend the extra money and only buy a "UL" listed device. If it's not it most likely is made in China and the build quality and safety is of little concern with those products. You might not be able to buy one on Amazon as most electronic products I have seen on that site are made in China.

If you want UL Listed

Check https://www.homedepot.com/p/Schumacher-Electric-70-Continuou... for about $32. However, it doesn’t have overload protection but my experience with Schumacher products, which are typically very reliable, is they will just go into an OFF mode.

I would think to get both overload protection and UL Listed you will have to go to a much higher price point. A guess might be about $100. But that would also likely get a unit with higher capacity.

Schumacher PC-6 AC To DC Power Converter

Thank you for information on the Schumacher PC-6 AC To DC Power Converter. That does look better than the one on Amazon.

I like to charge my Garmin Zumo XT inside my home before using it for bike rides. Something that is rated at 6 amps will be more than enough for my Garmin Zumo XT.
