Crash Detection Apps

There was a news item yesterday outlining how a crash detection app on her IPhone 14 saved a young girl's life after a serious crash. Thy phone called her Emergency Contact, which was her parents, in this case and gave them GPS coordinates that narrowed the search dramatically.

I have an Android phone and I see a number of Crash detection apps on Google Play Store. Is anyone here familiar with any of these apps?

If so any recommendations?

Many recent cars have an emergency call capability as well so check your vehicle. I do like the phone app approach however since it has the bases covered (in theory) even when you are in some else's vehicle, or riding a bus, train, etc.

Some phones have the SOS feature. My Samsung phone has it but you have to hit the power key 3 times on my device to start the SOS to send the message . Setup can be found here https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00050849/#:~:te... . Click on Use Emergency SOS .

The crash detection would be a big step forward if you are unable to touch the phone . Here is a persons first hand experience https://youtu.be/Wlb3qOVukaY

Interesting how the Apple feature works

you can cancel for 20 seconds. What happens, no accident, but the phone inadvertently falls to the floor? Do we have someone diving to get the phone and cancel the accident notification? Is that person’s attention to driving suddenly diverted?

not for me

My Garmin watch has this feature, but after too many false alerts I turned it off.

Don't want it on my phone either.

Cry Wolf

As these apps become more popular, my concern is, EMT's & law enforcement will not take these app reports seriously due to the high number of false alarms.

Hmmm...

I can imagine the "false alerts" you discuss while using the "crash detection" app on a wrist watch aren't all that uncommon.

I'd suspect there's an accelerometer in the phone and it might be frequently possible where banging your arm into objects could cause the accelerometer to detect what it would consider a "crash" because of the sudden and unexpected deceleration rate detected that could be withing the normal crash parameter specifications.

I dunno.. just seems like a likely scenario.

But technology ain't my thing.. I'm still using 2 tin cans n' a wet string tiring up my neighbors! wink

There's an accelerometer in

There's an accelerometer in the watch. The real FAIL in the watch is that it MUST be connected via BlueTooth to a phone which has cell network access. So if you leave your phone in the car, or there's no coverage, you die! Second fail is it sends a text message to someone you chose in your contacts list. Let's hope the wife sees the text, probably not because she only answers phone CALLS, and text is looked at when she has time. So again, you die. And it sends her GPS location info, which she doesn't understand, so again you die.....etc.

I really am beginning to hate cell phones and their never ending apps intruding into my daily life. That's the main reason it's off unless I need it.

Rant over....
