New model — Garmin Drive 53

Garmin has released a new Drive model, the 53.

It's available with and without traffic, and its map is the full North America plus a few Caribbean nations.

MSRP: $150

Its manual is specific only to the 53, a pleasant change compared to some manuals that cover multiple models with the advisory that some features only apply to some models:

Unless I missed it, the Drive 53 can not link to a cellphone for traffic using a Garmin app.

That is actually a very affordable price.

Another $20 for the model with traffic.

I do find it interesting/surprising that it cannot link to a smartphone for traffic.

Maybe Garmin is after a different market

I doubt that I’m alone but I don’t own a snartphone. I use a basic flip phone that costs me $6/monthly. OK, I get about two calls a week and about the same in text messages.

My nuvi 2689 does well in comparison to a high end smartphone. Over Easter we travelled almost 800 miles. Never did the smartphone tell me anything I didn’t know via the nuvi, and vice versa.

Strange as the UK/EU one does

Its manual is even different that the US model, both in its title and mentioning the traffic app.

price for app-worthiness

UK model is 20% more expensive than the US model; conversion = $187

WiFi and Bluetooth

Apparently the UK model has both WiFi and Bluetooth and the US model doesn't. Updates via Garmin Express required on US model I guess.

Just another one of Garmin's weird design decisions. Go figure. I do prefer 5" screens as it is easier to find a suitable mounting spot on crowded dashboards. But, I will definitely be sticking with my 3597 nuvis and DriveLuxe 51.

It's Nice...

To see garmin release an entry level GPS device. Lately, most of their new products are high end RV, off road or truck devices.

Strange about no Bluetooth connection to a smartphone though. Maybe it's a licensing issue with the Bluetooth technology to keep the cost down?

Yep

Garmin devices in general are more expensive in UK through Garmin but many retailers give good discounts
