The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in Virginia approved a speed camera pilot program.
The new six-month program will allow police to place speed cameras in school and work zones.
A total of 10 cameras will be put up. The program will cost $200,000, and if successful, it will be extended.
“There’s one reason why we’re doing this and that is to save lives,” Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey McKay said.

The state law permitting speed cameras in school speed zones in Nassau County, New York, required the county to do a study that shows the need for speed cameras for safety. The County never submitted the report. Accident statistics showed that for years, no one was ever injured in an accident in a school speed zone in Nassau county.

The local newspaper, Newsday, sued the county under the Freedom of Information law to submit all communications between the county and the speed camera contractor. They won the suit years later, and publicized the results:

All communications, including emails, were about how much money the county would collect. Not one was about safety.

After an unrelated scandel, the speed cameras were removed. It seems that the speed cameras were operated on days school was closed. That is not permitted under the law. The county refunded fines totalling more than one million dollars.

Right! Forgive the skepticism, but speed cameras are installed for only one thing, and that’s to make money for the local coffers.

Translation - if it makes the county money, it will be extended and we will lie, show no evidence and say it is for safety.

Is that just an idle phrase which means nothing or do you really believe that we don't respect the law?

Over in the ghetto (ie

Over in the ghetto (ie chicago), there's lots (hundreds?) of speed and red light cameras. Doesn't make it any safer. It's strictly about revenue.
