Changeable weather in Bay Area

One of the hottest June's ever in San Jose and now in early July we are having high temps below 80 degrees. Pretty interesting and drastic shift month to month.

I just found two old GPS

I just found two old GPS units. Though I would revive them.. Wish me luck that I remember how to name all the maps. The unit says my map was from NA 2010, a while ago..

It will be an interesting endeavor. If they are that old, they probably don't have lifetime map subscriptions. Garmin introduced Lifetime Maps in 2008, and the first map update issue to paid lifetime subscribers happened in January 2009. I remember paying $129 for a lifetime map subscription for my nuvi 755T! By the time I bought a refurb nuvi 855 in about 2010, the cost of lifetime maps had come down to about $80 (if I remember correctly). I don't remember which nuvi series was the first to have the bundled lifetime subscriptions where you didn't have to pay extra after the fact. The original rules said the lifetime subscription was non transferable, but I don't think Garmin ever enforced that rule. How things have changed!

I bought lifetime maps for my 885t but after updating them, to an SD card, the unit sees the map update but the GPS beeps but doesn't talk or I can't change the vehicle. I also get an update the blue tooth files in the unit flash screen. I did the factory reset but nothing happened. The GPS was fine when I used it. I think I need to replace all the files on the unit. They seem to have been corrupted. Any advice in getting the units files again? So far the 775t is running fine..

Did you use cloning to update the map on your nuvi 885 using an SD card? You might want to read through some of the comments about the recent problems I have had updating maps on my nuvi 855. In brief, I had to use a very old version of garmindevice.xml from a backup in order to get a successful map update with cloning. It would not work correctly using the current version of garmindevice.xml.

In terms of getting replacement files for a nuvi 885, your best bet is to find someone who has a working nuvi 885 and is willing to back it up and send you a copy of the backup. As far as not getting voice prompts and vehicles, you could try using the Garmin Express Tools menu to download new copies of the voice and vehicle files. You could use a clone copy for that operation also ... it should work to use cloning to get fresh copies of the voice files.

Fuel is not cheap so drive less than before. Going to Kin hut today to walk.

Thanks for the reply. I

Thanks for the reply. I thought it might be the xml file. I used Garmin Express to update the voices and cars but I can't select them. I might just buy a functioning unit on ebay and copy the files. I just don't know how the units get their serial numbers in the xml file. I don't think you can just copy all the files to another GPS to get it to work..

Weather

Lower temps and humidity this weekend.

and after a lot of driving during vacation we're happy to just stay home grin

550 Mile Round Trip

Just completed a 550 Mile Round Trip from Myrtle Beach SC to Wilkesboro NC and back. Easy trip using both Interstate and 2 lane back roads. The corn has tassled out and the soybeans seem to be thriving despite the heat. I left NC early on Saturday morning to beat the beach arrivals for the following week. My 3597 routed me through a slightly different route on the return leg. I chose to ignore the final 10 mile route suggestion as I knew I could make better time on a alternate route. The 3597 said my chosen route would be one minute longer but in reality I know I saved about 15 minutes due to beach traffic. All in all a good trip. My Ford Edge with the 3.5L V6 averaged 28 MPG which was really decent.

for another week.

Rogers service down across Canada

On July 8th, I woke up to my cell phone not wanting to send a text message. I was to drive a friend around that day. He was unable to use his cell phone either (no phone service, no txt msgs, no Internet, no email) and he was not able to pull up what was required for his work day. We are both Rogers customers. Fortunately he remembered some of his schedule and my "driving app" with offline maps got us to his destinations.

My Last Trip was.....

Washington, DC to Akron, OH.
