POI Entries

Many years ago, I started a Railroad Crossing POI submission....then decided it was too Tedious to search a map, locate railroad crossings, determine the LAT/LONG for each item and enter them into a spreadsheet.
I know, I’m lazy.

The question for the group is….can’t we, contact the specific company that we are looking to add a POI for and get that information from them? Say, Ford Dealerships in USA? Can’t we contact Ford and ask them for the LAT/LONG for all their dealerships instead of manually searching for them and determining the data necessary to make a good POI entry?

Wouldn’t every business have the locations of their stores, buildings, properties and so on? We are in the 21st century, right?
Just putting this out there and when I have a moment, I’ll reach out to some places to see what kind of response I get and let you know if it works….or not.

Very seldom does that work.

We can hope there is an easier way to get the locations. Sometimes the web sites will have them in an easy format that we can use. Sometimes they have them in a downloadable file, and sometimes not at all.

I abandoned my Brueggers file because it was impossible to get the data from the web site. I even emailed corporate to get a file. I got no responses from them.

Our hope that has always been is that once we get the poi file created we would get any changes from those that use them. That way the files are easier to keep updated.

KIA Once was Helpful

I did the KIA dealerships and for a couple of years I had great success getting a spreadsheet, with their various dealers names addresses etc.

Unfortunately this help didn't last long.

Individual dealers may or may not see it as beneficial to them, so it's luck of the draw. I also found that addresses, may have give the name of the metropolitan area that they're in and not the specific burough, etc. This makes it very dificult.

Good luck regardless.

I suspect that you will have only a small percentage of companies cooperate with you.

Some will take the attitude that they already provide this information on their own websites, and they do not wish to reduce the visits to their websites and the advertising they also have there.

Others may not have a compilation of the GPS data for their locations, and feel that assembling that information would require more time and expense than is justified.

I hope that my pessimism is not justified, so I will look for your follow-on postings.

That is why I stopped doing Brueggers.
