have to keep replacing shower's cartridge yearly

Nothing is more annoying than when the bathroom is quiet early in the AM, and I hear a drip.

then, come to see the shower tub is wet.

There is tons of residual water from when a shower ends, but it doesn't drip to the next morning.

Finally put 1 and 1 together. I've been replacing the Moen 1225 cartridge almost every year since 2016!!

I googled and someone else said the same thing, and the response was poor quality just that they used to replace for free. (If they still do, why would anyone buy it? They'd get it for free)

I did get it once for free and when it failed in a year I recall the Moen rep say you probably forgot to put silicone grease on it, try it. Actually it's greased out of the package.

Since it's a couple of o-rings sliding inside of a plastic tube (not brass), I guess it can leak in a year?

Ours is the type where you pull out to control flow, it's not simply temp like with the Posi-Temp.

Oh well there are worse things but I've never had to replace a cartridge that often. Often 6-10 years on the other products in our house...

Water pressure

Have you checked your home's water pressure? Maybe it's high and you could benefit by having a pressure regulator installed.

delta shower valve

Our house has high pressure, 82 PSI, and no reducing valve.

We have two shower valves in the bathrooms. One is Moen like you have. It is 20 years old. It came with a brass valve cartridge that lasted for years. It got too hard to turn and I replaced it with the Moen brand plastic cartridge. That lasted one year, then two more plastic ones the same thing. Installed a Moen brand brass cartridge ($30-) and that has been running for 5 years.

The other is a Delta valve that has variable flow with a big lever and a separate temp control with a 2" knob with a small lever. This was installed by a plumber in new construction and has been running good for three years. The round bezel is the same size as the Moen valve's bezel. Access behind the valve is needed to install the valve without disturbing the shower wall.

Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks for the reminder. The handle in the shower has been getting more and more difficult to turn. It was last replaced in feb 2019. Called moen and they're sending out another one.

It's a 1222b, so the plastic one. Don't think it really matters much. We got quite a bit of calcium in the water so it destroys cartridges over time.

Got grohe fixtures in the kitchen and other bathrooms. Already had to replace the kitchen one within a few years after initial faucet install.

I suspect the minerals

I suppose that variations in the mineral content of the local water account for a lot of the variation in people's experience with plumbing.

Could that be the reason? A new cartridge is in fact a little easier to turn than an old one, but in one year, not by much.

I guess I should call them as Kohler and Delta do in fact send free catridges. Kohler imho is what I would use in any new install. They'll send free o-rings and diverters too for the kitchen faucet.

Technically delta told me you're supposed to be the original owner of the fixture, not a person who purchased the home with the fixture, but when I said maybe I was it's been at least 15 years so not sure, they send the cartridges.

How about high pressure as another person said, what does that do, I get it in theory, but does it destroy cartridges? The Kohler and Deltas seem fine. But they don't have the side to side plus in and out action like the Moen.

interesting

Found this article that sort of sums it up....
