Garmin Express 7.11.1

For quite some time I've been plagued by a desktop shortcut that would not start GE, nor would running the executable from the appropriate folder start the program. Sometimes a reboot got GE started, sometimes not. On occasion I would get the Garmin splash screen and then nothing. If GE did start, I typically would get a message "do you want to allow GE to make changes" or something similar. With 7.11.1.0 I do not get the inquiry about changes, and GE also reliably starts on the first try. If I leave the GE setting to run in the background, GE starts in a fraction of a second. With that setting disabled, start time is probably about 2 to 3 seconds.

Installed under Win10 and working fine.

Now the .1 update says one of my two 2689's needs a map update!

Both 2689 & 660 have the latest Map Update installed!

Bottom Line,: "Garmin Express Installation Failed" resolved. Maps updated successfully on 3597, 2495 and 260

Finally decided to update the maps on my 3597, 2495 and the good old 260 after more than two years. The COVID-19 thing has really limited my desire to drive more than necessary.

Dusted off my Windows 7 computer that I have been using to update the Garmin Maps without a hitch. I use a Windows 10 laptop for my daily use and try to keep software installations only to those that I use regularly.

The downloading of Garmin Express proceeded and completed normally and smoothly. The installation of GE started and proceeded normally, until at a point it showed a message:

"The installation failed. Try again"

I tried again, it failed again. Rebooted the computer and tried again. Failed again, and again.

After a few tries I looked up the Garmin Support web site, searched for failed installation of Garmin Express.

It listed possible reasons and remedies. I tried them (almost) all, no success.

Looking at the list of reasons for failing to install more carefully . I noticed that there is this entry on the Win7 system requirements

Verify the Computer Meets System Requirements for Garmin Express

"Microsoft .NET 4.7.2 (included in the download)."

My Win7 computer had .NET 4.7.1 which did not meet the system requirement. But the above statement by Garmin appears to imply that the download and installation should update .NET automatically and it should work. Wrong! Silly me.

I then updated the .NET manually. Voila! The Garmin Express installation proceeded successfully without issues.

Maps on the 3597, 2495 and 260 updated without incident.

OMG...I tried so many versions and all failed to install. I thought the .NET installer happened automatically with the GE installer in the past but I can't recall. I then manually installed .NET v.4.7.2 and then GE installed fine.
