We appreciate you contributions. Enjoy your week of recognition.

Thanks!

I'm hardly on the level of contribution of mcginkleschmidt with his large JCV files, but I'm glad to have crawled out from under my rock when I recognized those four digits as elevations and spoke up.

I come to the POI Factory daily to read a few posts and keep my Garmin current.

Arches N.P. is not far away, and is a major feature on a day-long tour that I have offered first time visitors over the 45 years that I have lived here.

I usually leave I-70 at the eastern Cisco exit. Anyone seen in the ghost town of Cisco should be assumed to be armed and dangerous, as there is no law enforcement. Turn south to follow the Colorado river down to Moab. Stop at Fisher Towers along the way for a break and possibly a hike to the south.

If you did not pack a cooler, Moab is your best opportunity for eating.

I always show folks the Double Arch which was featured at the opening scene of the 2nd Indiana Jones movie. If there is time and walking ability, we will see the 306' long Landscape Arch also.

Everyone should carry more water than they can imagine drinking, especially in the heat. Sunscreen and a hat are REALLY good ideas. A bandana for a curtain hanging from under the hat can protect the neck and ears (which the gnats like to eat beginning in mid-May). Autumn is the best time to visit the desert.

The high point of the tour is to head north and then turn west toward the Island In The Sky portion of Canyonlands NP. But before you get there, turn south to visit Dead Horse Point State Park. A person could spend a day just contemplating the 300˚ view from the short paved rim at the point. I have overheard visitors who just came from the Grand Canyon say, "This is better!" It is all good.

I usually follow the highway north to I-70 if it is going to be dark. If not, I drive back up the canyon along the Colorado River. It always reminds me of pictures of Egypt in National Geographic from my childhood. Seeing Pharaohs carved into the canyon walls would almost seem to be expected.

Enjoy the beauty! And take care of it...

My wife and I drove by Arches NP several...

...times before finally stopping there two years ago. We liked it so much that we went back there just a couple of months ago. Wonderful place. If you are not looking for it, you will drive right past the place. You enter just north of Moab, but then you have to drive up a mesa (or butte, always get those two confused), to get to the scenery. Enjoy your week in the pasture and keep up the good work Thurst461!

Congratulations and thanks for your comments Thurst461... including the ones posted here in this thread now, about how you show visitors a tour - great insight! I've piloted a small plane over the area at a good sightseeing altitude but have never been there driving around on the ground, that's still on my bucket list along with the other NP's in the area. Enjoy your week in the C.O.W. spotlight!
