Oregon 450T Freezes

I bought a new (not refurb) Garmin Oregon 450T handheld back in 2016. I've used it for 5 seasons now and it's worked perfectly. Recently however, it boots to the home screen and then freezes. None of the buttons or touch screen functions work. The only way to clear the condition is to remove the batteries until the screen goes blank. When the batteries are reinstalled, the unit boots and works normally.

The problem only occurs when the unit hasn't been used for a few days. I've tried a master reset, fresh batteries, removing the SD card and all loaded data.

It's really just a minor inconvenience since the condition can be cleared by removing and reinstalling the batteries. I've used a dozen or more handhelds over the years and this is the first time I've seen this particular issue.

Anyone else have this problem and if so, is there a fix?

Well

Possibly linked to files etc you've added recently. Have you tried removing all your data and then seeing if the problem persists?

I know you say you've already removed data but ensure you've also removed maps and anything else that you've added.

The only map on the 450T is a factory installed topo map which I hesitate to remove. All other data has been deleted.

The strange thing is the problem is sporadic and only occurs after a prolonged period (week or more) of inactivity.

Well

If that's the map that came with it then I'd leave it, if it's been updated recently then it may be worth removing it although it's unlikely to be the issue. Can't think of what else you could try. Very strange issue.

Extended shut down.

The only thing I can think of that would be different when booting after an extended shut down is that the device will have to a much more aggressive search and acquisition of the satellite signals than it does when booting after a more recent use. I know that doesn't really help much in solving the issue but maybe it will trigger an idea from someone else.

battery type

Is the battery type set correctly? See Setup / System / Battery Type.

Possible

It's possible the problem is linked to the type of boot. It usually shows up when the boot is attempted at a different location than where it was last shut down. Could be a coincidence though. I'll play around a bit with that one.

Thanks Alan.

Yes, I use rechargeable NiMh batteries in all my units and the settings are set accordingly.

A system or map update was the first thing I though of but neither has been changed for over a year.

I've had units go into boot loops before but that condition is usually fixed with a master reset. This "boot freeze" requiring a complete power down to cure is a new one on me.
