Garmin DriveSmart 50 SD card

Today GarminExpress v.7.5.0.0 in my DriveSmart 50 is asking for a SD card to install Map 2022.20

No matter what I do the Micro SD card is not recognized by GE.

I format a 4 GB card to FAT, NO GO.
Format it to FAT 32 , NO GO.

Tried a brand new 16GB SD card. NO GO.

Garmin Express either tells me it is an incompatible card in FAT or that the card cannot be found in FAT 32.

Additionally each time I do this GE refuses to start again unless I reboot the computer.

Tried this in two different computers, same result.

Anyone know what's happening?

Make sure your device has a good charge on it before you start.

DS 50

Always have the unit charged before map update, in fact oly 1 week ago I updated to 2022.10 with no problem.Did'nt ask for SD card a week ago either.

What would happen if I deleted the 2022.10 maps on the SD 50 ???

DS 55

I'm using a DS 55 with a 32GB microSD card and had no problems installing the new map just now with GE v7.5.0.0. I would try reinstalling 2022.10 first to see if it will work.

No problem

using v 2022.10 in the GPS or in MapSource or BaseCamp.

I've followed all the links in charles45 links, no joy. To be honest there wasn't anything there I had not tried already.

I see that the 2022.20 map update is 7.66 GB and the SD 50 only has a 7 GB capacity.

I agree about reinstalling. A number of times, Garmin Express has said an update for my 3597 was complete when it really wasn't. Reinstalling solved the problem. Restarting the GPS, not just sleep, has something to do with it. Also restart the computer.

PROBLEM SOLVED

Contrary to everything I have/had read including "charles45" link information, nothing worked.

What ended up happening is this.

After trying every known way of formatting, such as FAT, Fat 32, use default etc and nothing working I tried just the way it came up in Windows Explorer which was 32 kb.

It gave me the option to format at 32 kb and that is what I did. Then the DS 50 informed me that a new SD card was installed and do I want to format it? I clicked on yes and the damn thing formatted the card to FAT 32 at 64 kb. This is not even an option given at formatting.

Lo and behold Garmin Express now said it can see and read the Micro SD card.

After I let it install the Map v.2022.20 I found that all map data was installed in the DS 50 and only the JCV info at 498,872 kb was installed on the Micro SD card.

Thanks for trying to help me solve this problem.

Somewhat strange. That 2nd number, say the 64 KB is the file allocation size (sometimes called cluster size). For SD cards that are 32GB and smaller Microsoft says to select the file system FAT32 and allocation unit size 32 KB. But in the drop down menu of the Format dialog box, 64 KB is a choice.

On my 2689, the 16GB microSD is formatted to FAT32 (default) and 8192 bytes allocation size.

Me too

My Nuvi 1390 wanted a memory card to update the map to 2022.20.

After reading here about the map files getting bigger I figured I needed a bigger card than the 8 GB it had used for the previous map version. So I ordered two 32 GB cards from Amazon.

Putting in one of the new cards GE came back and said "Card not found". So then I tried formatting, tried the second card. Same result. Maybe order two 16 GB cards to try.

The strange thing was the Windows Explorer did not have any problem seeing and using the card being in the GPS.

On a whim I put in the card I used for the previous map version. I got the same error "Card not found". So somehow GE could not find the card it had used before.

So this tells me that this is a GE problem/bug.

So I decided to go ahead and use the cloning method instead. That worked without any problem. So now the 1390 works with the new map version and with the full screen JCV file.

Thanks to the forum for all user input and guidance!
