the most current map is the

the most current map is the same for any Garmin.
Using GE you don't even have to think about it.
There have also been a couple of firmware updates for the 1490.
Best to load GE and let it figure it out.

Firmware all updated with GE. Only issue is Garmin wants too much for the maps. I believe $69 or $135 for lifetime updates with GE. Not sure its worth it. I used to be able to download all the maps for free from file sharing torrent sites until Covid-19. Thx

I was a hold out using GE

I was a hold out using GE and only started using it when the older options were retired. GE works fine, now that I know more about it and how to get it to install all of NA to my SD card.

Map update cost.

I would agree...not worth it on a 1490. For that money you can buy a used or refurbished more modern Garmin that comes with the lifetime map subscription.

Yep for sure. I prefer refurbished than used. Most like will get the Driveluxe 51 as you suggest. Refurbished for only $99 and I don't have to worry about paying for maps anymore and it has lifetime live traffic and voice as well.

I have the drliveluxe 50,

I have the drliveluxe 50, drivesmart 61, and 65. I prefer the latter 2 for the size. Easier to see. The driveluxe50/51 is great if it's close to you in the car.

The 51 would be ok for me because I would have it high on the dash right in front of me on a friction mount. Just like I use the 1490 now. I bought one from thegpsstore.com.
