Caution GE where you download

I needed to download Garmin Express and for what ever reason I did not pay too much attention to the link I clicked. It said
"MyGarminExpress"
(CAREFUL DO NOT GO HERE) -> https:// www. my garmin express .com/

I clicked on download and things looked funny. Told me its downloading, installing maps and ended up telling me that my device is now locked.

Well I know that is BS because I did not have a GPS connected anyway.

Needless to say I stopped this right away.

Just posting this to make others aware of this SCAM site.

Neat graphics!

The site tells me my device is now locked and the error is a due to a driver error.
Mmmmmm, but I am downloading from an Android tablet with no devices attached.

Good catch! Thanks

Good catch! Thanks

It’s always a good

It’s always a good practice to check the url especially when the webpage looks suspicious.

Thanks for the head's up Melaqueman

I wasn't aware that there are multiple places to download GE. I've always just been on GE itself, and when it says that there's an updated version available I click the button that says Update and that's that.

So far no problems, but I'll keep a closer eye on the next update to see if it tries to redirect me to some place sketchy.

Website looks legit. That's the problem. They did a good job hiding the URL when we place mouse pointer on the download link. They even place this at the top of the page to convince potential victims:

Download Garmin express - www.garmin.com/express

but the Download Now link isn't from garmin.com domain.

Domain was created in April 2019. They have been scamming for over a year. I hope they get zero victim.

I looked for a link to report the abuse to GoDaddy or Garmin but I can't find it.

It does now. I have submitted a phishing report. Let's see if GoDaddy takes care of it.

I also submitted a report to Norton so anyone using their extension in a browser should bring up a warning too. Norton had no previous reports on the site.

Caution

Either GoDaddy took care of it quickly, or my security software is blocking it (but usually I'd see a warning instead of the dead-link message I see if it was still active). I couldn't go to the website.

Melaqueman, your heads-up message is much appreciated, but careful about publicly posting links to scam websites. Not everyone is using security software, and not everyone reads a thread before clicking. Some confoozled readers might take the bait thinking that link went to the actual Garmin website. Downloading anything at the scam site would probably subject a user to spyware or ransomware. It's safer to disguise or break a scam link if you want to warn people.

I've adjusted the post so the link is not functional.

Another level of protection

If you desire another level of protection then you can consider adding the Block Site for Chrome extension. It enables you to add a URL and your Windows based PC will not make the connection to the site. You can find the extension at https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/block-site-website...

There is also an Block Site extension for Firefox should you prefer Firefox as your browser.

done a scan yet

Melaqueman: Have you done a scan for worms or viruses yet?

If you have already have a good program, it's still advisable to run a scan as there are ways to defeat detection on downloads.

Hey, GoDaddy did take care of it

Domain no longer exists.

Firefox says:

Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site.
We can’t connect to the server at hxxps : // w w w . m y g a r mi ne xp re ss.com.

note:
I edited the real URL so it's not clickable

Strange... I was unable to access the website from home PC last night but now (in the morning) I can access it from work PC.

Possibly another bogus site?
