GPS Labelling Tip

As the Nuvi 670 doesn't leave a heck of a lot of space to put a personal sticker or anything on it I came up with a solution for put a 'If found please return' label on it.

In any graphic editor program create a .jpeg with the text:

This GPS unit belongs to Wizard of Oz
mobile: 555-6969
e-mail: johndoe@planetzog.com

Upload that to your GPS and set it as the splash screen for when the unit boots up.

While you may not get the unit back if stolen (who know's - it might tweek the thief's consience!) but at least if you misplace the unit and someone honest recovers it you have a chance of getting it back.

Great Idea!

That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing it with us. smile

Good Idea, but ...

I too thought this was a great idea and created a JPG when I got home. The problem is, now my GPS tells the thief whose house to go to to unlock it.

If you do this, make sure you make your security place somewhere that the thief won't think of, or pass on the way to your house!!

I'm on my way out to change my security place.

labeling your gps for return if lost

I would not worry about a thief knowing your location. It would be simple for him to touch where to and "HOME". YOUR UNIT WILL LEAD HIM TO YOUR HOUSE!

This is only a .jpeg - Picture File

From the comments above.

This idea is purely a picture/ photo jpeg.
It contains no security 'secret place', home waypoint or anything.

It is merely a image with your contact information (cell phone #, e-mail address or whatever you wish) that appears as the splash screen when switching the unit on.

BTW - I have done this on my two digital cameras as well...

(Besides - as far as I am concerned, your secret place should never ever be your home!)

Not if Locked

The unit can't lead him to my home if it is locked. That is the problem with having your name on the unit. That will lead the thief to your home, and if that is your security place, it will unlock the unit.
