Garmin DriveLuxe 51 LMT-S Random Powers Down

I have a Garmin DriveLuxe 51 LMT-S that randomly powers down. I assume I just need to ship it to the Mother Ship (Garmin Hospital) for repair. I have done a hard reset. Is there anything else I should try before shipping it back?

Also, does anybody happen to know if Garmin has a flat rate for out-of-warranty repairs on these devices? If so, how much is it? Do they simply send me back a refurbished unit then?

Check charging

Be sure the unit is getting fully charged. Sometimes the issue is with the battery.

Put the latest firmware on. Even if it is, try reinstalling the firmware.

Do you have large folders of POI loaded? If so, try deleting them and restarting.

I broke the screen of an older out of warranty device and had to pay quite a bit to get a refurbished unit back.

The 51 LMT-S is a discontinued unit so there may be no refurbs to sell you.

I was also wondering about the battery. It does indicate that it is getting fully charged.

I did download the latest map and it appears as if the firmware is current.

I used to be kind of a POT junkie, but I haven't added any to this Garmin.

I will e-mail Garmin and see what they advise. I still have my Garmin Nuvi 3597 and I am updating the mapping software as we speak. I may be a bit reluctant to put very much money into a Garmin at this point.

Thank you for the reply. I do appreciate it.

Wall charge it over night,

Wall charge it over night, then disconnect and see what the battery status is.

Could be that it ran down in sleep mode and the battery does not have enought of a charge to keep it going.

This happens with my wife's unit because she forgets to do a complete shutdown.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

I don’t judge

Garmin DriveLuxe 51 LMT-S Random Powers Down

I did contact Garmin yesterday and this is the response I have received:

Hi James,

Please use the following directions to gather and send shutdown logs. Once we have this information we will be able to further assist you with determining the cause of the device powering off or rebooting.
In order to gather the shutdown logs from your device, export the logs from your device.

To export the logs:

Touch Volume on the Where To? and View Map Screen
Hold your finger in the upper-right corner of the screen for approximately 10-20 seconds until the screen changes
Touch Shutdown Causes
Touch Developer Info on some devices before this step
Touch the menu button in the upper left corner (three horizontal bars)
Touch Export All
Once this data has been exported, please take the steps below before plugging the device into the computer:

Touch Volume on the Where To? and View Map Screen
Hold your finger in the upper-right corner for approximately 15-20 seconds until the screen changes
Scroll down and touch MTP Settings
Touch Configuration and Settings on some devices before this step
Touch Mass Storage Single Session
Touch Save
Connect the device to the computer
Once you have connected the device to the computer, obtain the logs from your device so they can be attached to your reply.

To obtain the logs:

Open MyComputer/Computer on your PC
Open the Garmin/Nuvi drive listed
Go to the Address bar at the top of this window and click after the name of the drive
Type .system after the name of the drive (E:.system for example, with E being the drive letter your computer assigned to the device)
Press Enter on the keyboard
Open the Diag folder
Right click on the Shutdowns folder and click Send To
Select Compressed Folder
This will create a new file below the folder called Shutdowns.zip, drag and drop this file to your desktop
Attach this Shutdowns.zip file to your email reply

Thank you for choosing Garmin,

Tyronne

My replacement Garmin DriveLuxe 51 LMT-S arrived today. To Garmin's credit, that was a pretty good turn around time. I shipped it on 07-24-2019.
