I thought in the past Garmin Express would give you the option to download only certain areas like west, east, etc. I don't recall seeing that option anymore.
Am I missing something?
Still does. I recently went to update my maps and Garmin Express complained that there was not enough room. You are then presented with an option to select your region.
Just as an "off-the-wall" thought. How big is your Garmin Express window? Occasionally, windows can be too small to display all the content, such as a "selection" button. An indicator that the window is too small, is the presence of a scroll bar on the right side of the window.
Options button is at the bottom left! So you need to look for it and click it to see the different map options.
It's much like installing a new program. Always check everything that is offered on the page you are looking at before moving on. If you do not check, you may get things installed you never wanted!
Interesting info, I hadn't even thought to do that. Thanks for the tip Melaqueman!
Food for thought: The last time I tried to update, I did not have enough internal storage. Using a memory chip put into my GPS, the entire file loaded and the amount that would not fit into the GPS's memory was stored on the memory chip. Hope you are able to do the same. The same chip holds all of my POI files also.
When I use GE on my Nuvi 660, it doesn't give me any "option." The only region it shows is East.

MapUpdater used to give me the various regions, but it no longer offers the latest maps so I am forced to use GE.
My nuvi 67lm having storage full. I have been using a microsd from my phone but manually selecting regions would be great.
has been possible for a long time. Sometime it depends where you bought the Garmin.
Friends bought a Garmin somewhere in Tennessee or Arkansas at a Costco.. What they did not realize it only contained the lower 48! They wanted all of N.A i.e Canada and Mexico. So on their way home they took it back.
Your nuvi is one of those where Express cannot install maps to the sd card, to install other regions to your device or to use a sd card see this Garmin FAQ
When I read this topic, I thought I had missed a way to make GE work on my 660. I guess not. I'll just keep doing it the way I had been with Map Install. Thanks.
Thanks for the info, did not know you could choose on the map updates.
I never use Garmin Express. I have an old 760 that works great. I use Map Installer and install the entire US, Canada, and Mexico. I have an SD card in the slot.
Maybe I didn't see the option because I was able to (barely) download all onto my Garmin. Next time might be a different story. I have a two monitor configuration. One is vertically placed, the other horizontally. I have ample room to see the window unless the window didn't expand and I didn't notice I could enlarge it.
On another note, what's the story with Garmn SID files? They're huge and can they be deleted, if so, which ones?
Can you upload the file or share the link to Mapinstaller?
Easy to find with a Google search:
This is why I miss the old MapSource program.
It was very easy to select zones, states, sections of the country that you waned to load on your GPS.
You could even select sections of Canada
I remember on the old MapUpdater, the region options were offered whether there was sufficient internal memory or not. It would have been nice if Garmin had just left these options on Garmin Express. I am guessing the reason they removed the region options is because all of the newer road navigation devices have other feature files (JCV, voice recognition, SID files, etc.) in addition to the map, and at least some of these features are not available if you install a partial map.
You can do the same with BaseCamp, and MapSource still works. As Alan says though both only transfer the map, and not the other files required on modern devices.
