Displaying gas stations etc on map

Does anyone know how I get the map to display gas stations, restaurants etc? All these are all displayed in the search menu, so why can't it show you an icon on the map to represent these?

Secondly, for a brief moment, when browsing the map, these icons actually appeared on the map, but when I restarted the device, they disappeared.

Daz, you did not mention what model GPSr you have

However, on my nuvi 650, when I am in the "View Map" mode, if I press the "+" button ( upper right corner of screen ) enuf times ( sometimes 3 or 4 times ) , I'll see all the icons for the locations / POIs that are near to my current position. I can then use my finger to "drag" the map in any direction to see other icons/locations.

What unit do you have my 2720 has what is called symbols and you have to change the symbol from a round grey dot to what ever icon you want then it will show you like hospitol school gas casino ETC

You'll only see these icons of the built in poi's when in the browse map mode/search as you have found out.
You will have to be zoomed nearly all the way in before they show up.

You won't see these icons in the nav map/driving mode, no matter how far you zoom in. That is why a lot of people use the custom bmps for their custom poi's.

That's one thing I don't

That's one thing I don't like about Garmin. My old Magellan has an option to display different categories of POIs on the screen while driving.

I agree

That would be helpful if Garmin gave you the option of displaying POI's on the nav. screen. You would think that would be obvious to them.
