Interesting problem

Something curious happened.

My Nuvi 50LM has the Garmin CN North America NT map on the SD card, put there by GE a couple of updates ago. On the SD card is a OSM map (named Southern Ontario-Quebec OSM routable.img) for segments of lower Ontario and Quebec covering the Niagara area to Hamilton to Montreal and is actively selected along with the CN North America map. This works and routes great for my needs.

I set up the Drive 51LM to do the same. The Drive has the CN North America map fully in internal memory. I put the same OSM map on the SD card, disconnected it from the PC and rebooted, and activated it.

When I finished I disconnected the Drive from the PC and turned it on. It kept rebooting to the GARMIN logo screen over and over again. There was a full charge on the battery and I even plugged it in to a wall charger after watching this for 15 minutes waiting to see if anything happend.

I finally decided to plug it back into the PC and delete the OSM map. Disconnected from the PC and it booted up fine.

Then I wondered why the Nuvi worked and the DRIVE did not and what was different. I finally put the OSM Map in the Drive internal memory, rebooted, checked the OSM map selection and rebooted. This time it worked. And so did a simulation of the route I want to take.

I think this must have something to do with the initialization of the SD card sequence in relation to when the maps are queried and activated. I must admit that I don't have the time right now to pursue this line of reasoning and was wondering if anyone else has noticed this?

Well

It's possible the initial load of the map to the sd card corrupted as the continual rebooting can be a sign of that. Or the sd card itself is faulty. You could confirm this by trying the working card from your nuvi in your drive.

Thanks, but

Thanks, but

Card is good. I have POIs on there also and they worked.

Test 1
But, just to test that theory, I reformatted the card, copied the POI back to the card, and moved the OSM map image from internal memory to the card. Same loop.

Test 2
Used a new card with the same results.

So I think it has something to do with the timing of the reading of the SD card and the loading of maps.

Maybe it expects ALL the maps to be in one physical location.

I don't remember if I had the OSM map installed on the Nuvi before GE moved the Garmin map to the SD card. Update: The PC timestamp date on the OSM map is 2014 so I'm thinking it WAS on the Nuvi SD card before GE moved the map, because internal memory on that device was getting lower with each map update.

And seeing that the OSM map is almost 5 years old I'll be downloading and selecting a newer version before my next trip. So maybe something was gained by this problem after all.

Well ...

It's certainly strange. I have maps internally and on cards in a selection of nuvis and drives and they load without issue.
