win 1809

MS has re-released the Oct 1809.

Wonder if anyone has downloaded MS said the rollout would be slower than past updates.

hummm. I just checked for any new updates on my Windows 10 Home PC, there was one for Windows Defender definitions.

Before and after the successful update I'm still at 1809, 17763.253

Windows 10 October 2018 Update Is At Last Being Pushed Automatically

The ill-fated Windows 10 October 2018 Update has hitherto been offered only to those Windows users who manually sought it, either by using the dedicated upgrade and media creation tools or by manually checking for the update in Windows Update. Three months after its initial release, Microsoft has at last started pushing it to Windows users automatically. (more in link)

My PC was also automatically updated last night, only it's build is 17134.556. Wonder how MS decides who gets what.

My PC automatically received some updates this morning (01/19/2019) but apparently nothing major. When I checked, it still shows 1803, 17134.523 and that I am up to date!

I have no idea how MS makes decisions and don't really want to know. I don't mind being at the bottom of the updates line. Hopefully the bugs are fixed before I get them!

Try Ubuntu

Try Ubuntu Linux, you can even dual-boot it with Windows. If you do, you might find yourself not using Windows much anymore, that's what happened with us and our laptop.

Now sure, I'm a Linux geek who does IT and I'm typing this from an old Windows desktop btw, but your Great-Grandmother could use Ubuntu.

I guess this is a good place to ask ...

Since version 1803 Windows did away with "homegroup" and now my laptop and PC can't share files anymore. Every now and then I try researching a work around but it never clicks for me.

I spend an equal amount of time on both, in my home, one is upstairs the other downstairs. I have files on the "desktop" on both that I need from time to time and it always seems I'm on the wrong computer at the time.

I can see my PC in the network from the laptop, but it shows as a Media Device and clicking on it opens Media Player, does me no good.

Has anyone here been able to figure out simple file sharing between a couple computer at home without needing to remember some long ridiculous "path"

I'm real tempted to roll back to something before 1803 but that wouldn't be a good thing for the most part.

So ... little help please!

Not sure this is what you are looking for. I use OneDrive. Have the app on my tablets and phone. Laptop has the Windows icon. Has the ability to view my files and pictures any where I may be. If I add a file it updates all the others. Get the One Drive app for Windows 10 at the Microsoft store https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/onedrive/9wzdncrfj1p3#acti... .Android or Apple both have the app available.

I have two laptops running Windows 10 1809 Build 17763.316 and 1 desktop running Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.590 sharing folders and files just fine.
You need to make sure all computers are setup to use Workgroup "WORKGROUP".

I can't seem to find workgroup. Getting homegroup to work took a long time but once it was it was great, like the two computer were one, just easily navigate to files on either one.

By the way, the laptop connects via WiFi the PC is hardwired.

I never set up onedrive, not a fan of cloud storage. Thanks for the info though.

Wi-Fi or hardwired doesn't matter.

Oh well back to the USB stick and stairs.

Type "Troubleshoot Network" into the magnifying glass search on your desktop & let it run. It will solve a lot of network issues.

Your stairs may be easier than all this so it is up to you.

Yea, they would be. I looked at that, and many other sites, both Microsoft and forums, all greek to me. The internet has way too much information and by the time you get something fixed you forget what worked and what didn't because it's all a blur. I have a friend who is an IT guy and he came over and got it to work, but it was a chore, even for him. All's good now and I won't wear out the carpet on the stairs.

Thanks again for the help.

Finally my last machine

I clicked the manual update check weeks ago and got "October" 1809 on three of my four machines. The laggard was my only Home Edition machine, so I suspect that may have had something to do with the late offer.

Anyway, yesterday I clicked the manual check for updates button again on the last machine, and got the Update.

As installed, it shows as 10.00.17763.00, just like the higher grade edition boxes.
