PSA Nuvi 6x/5x LM/LMT models are no longer supported by your warranty

I own a Nuvi 67LM GPS and recently, the device no longer produces any sound. After several factory resets, reinstall of the firmware, I decided to contact support. As I purchased for christmas last year (2017), I contacted Garmin along with my proof of purchase. The representative I spoke to apologized and told me that the GPS I currently have has been discontinued since January of this year. Thus, they can no longer neither offer support nor repair the device. I asked for clarification and she said the Nuvi 68,67,57 are on the same boat and that my model isn't alone in this discontinuation. I just thought everyone should know.

Jan. 2015

Those models were released in Jan. 2015. Your issue sounds like a hardware problem, so it is not surprising that Garmin will not replace an out of warranty device that has a hardware issue. If it had been a software problem, I suspect they would have given you some help in resolving the problem.

If you purchased last December and if the device was new or a factory refurb, it should still be under the one year warranty. If you have proof of purchase, I would contact support again and push them a little harder to honor their warranty. Ask to speak with a supervisor if you get no help from the first support person you talk to.

Garmin's past practice in out of warranty situations has often been to offer a replacement at a discounted price. In many cases however, you could find a refurb at a better price than the replacement cost offered by Garmin. However, if you would be interested in getting a replacement deal from Garmin, I would call support again and ask for that directly. If they say no, again, ask to speak with a supervisor.

Strange ...

As Alan says it should still be under warranty so Garmin should replace it, if not with that model because it's discontinued then with a comparable one.

I've recently had my 6 year old Etrex 20 fail, the zoom in button broke. Even though it's discontinued and well out of warranty Garmin replaced it with a refurbished model at half price. As Alan suggests, call them again and if necessary escalate it to a supervisor. Good luck.

Not Typical of Garmin!

I find this quite surprising! Garmin's response to your problem is completely opposite of what I have experienced in the past! It sounds to me like you talked to a tech who just didn't want to "go the extra mile" as Garmin has a reputation for doing.

Good advice from Alandb and sussamb, call back and talk to a supervisor!

Contacted again

I talked on the phone and asked for a supervisor.
The representative was very hesitant in transferring me to his supervisor but I kept on demanding and he transferred me.
The supervisor said although I purchased it new in December and have a proof of purchase, he can only honor the warranty if the device has not been discontinued. He said that Garmin no longer produces any of the parts to even fix the unit. He referred me into buying the new current product. He recommended me to look into the DriveSmart series. He offered me a 10% discount on the new device if purchased on the phone with him to lower the burden of the cost.

Wow!

That is really disappointing in the way Garmin handled your warranty claim. If their support reputation has deteriorated that much, they won't be around for long.

This is one more sign (to me) that Garmin is abandoning the road navigation market.

Alarming!!

Of what use is a one year warranty on a factory refurbished unit?? Usually refurbs are discontinued products.

For that matter, how good is a warranty on a new unit that is discontinued the day after you bought it??

If this is a new policy on the part of Garmin, I may have to rethink my brand loyalty!

Weird ...

Well that's rubbish. Which country are you in? If still in warranty return it to the seller as it's really their issue to sort out. I really though don't know what's going on here as Garmin are known for generally excellent support.

Edit: I'm going to raise this with one of my contacts in Garmin, if you don't get it resolved check back here and I'll post once I hear back.

repair estimator

There is an online out of warranty repair estimator at https://www8.garmin.com/support/outofwarranty.html and putting in the 67LM it comes back at $99 for a full overhaul. But I agree you likely still are under warranty unless some unusual circumstances exist.

Another possibility at getting a replacement would be to check if you paid with a credit card, and if so see if that credit card extends the warranty. The credit card I use extends the warranty the same amount of time as the original. In my experience, you get a replacement unit that is often as good if not better than the discontinued product that has failed.

OK, my contact at Garmin also agrees that's nonsense. If you can pm me your email he'll have someone reach out to you.

Unfortunate.

That is unfortunate, but doesn't take away from the credit you deserve for your efforts. POI Factory members are grateful to have you here. I hope the OP will come forward and explain.

One wonders

One wonders if the op's claim is true, after they have been contacted by the admins here and not supplying any contact info to sussamb.

If this had happened to me, I would be using every means possible to get the GPS replaced for free.

There are Federal laws/regulations in place to prevent this scenario from happening to consumers. As long as a business is in operation (doesn't go bankrupt), one would think that they would have to honor a "Warranty" on a product. If this allegation is true, then the Federal Trade Commision would be very interested.

I personally don't think that Garmin would do this to a customer.
