"Spare" 3597

Through an odd set of circumstances, I now have a spare 3597. Here is what happened:

The other day, I made a quick stop at the grocery store, and when I returned to my car I realized I had inadvertently forgot to lock the car. The first thing I did is look for my 3597 and it was gone! I was really PO'ed at myself for being so stupid. The mount and cable were still there on the vent mount, but the 3597 was gone.

I have 2 3597 mounts ... one in the car and one in the pickup. Knowing that 3597's are very hard to find any more and that my 2 mounts only work on a 3597, I decided to take the risk on eBay and try to find a used device. I put in a bid on one that looked pretty good but didn't include the mount or GTM-60.

Then a day later, my 3597 turned up in cubby in my car where I never keep it. I have no memory of putting it there, but was very happy it was not stolen after all. And guess what ... I won the bid on eBay ($91.50 including shipping).

The 3597 arrived yesterday. It is in perfect shape ... looks like it has barely been used. It had last been used in 2017 and had 2018.20 map version. It had been left in sleep mode, so the battery was completely flat, but charged up just fine.

I have registered my "new" 3597 on Garmin Express, erased all the old user data with a hard reset and updated the software, maps, voices, etc. I will need to get a micro SD card for it sometime, but I was able to fit the full NA map by deleting all the unused language and text files. Everything is working perfectly, so I now have 2 3597's!

Ditto

My first 3597 was a factory refurb from a Garmin dealer online.

I also risked an ebay purchase of a 2nd 3597 and it also works well and has no problem with map updates, etc. Hopefully I'm set for a couple decades before having to shop again. I'm quite sure your ebay deal was better than mine pricewise wink

While driving I realize my phone isn't in the center console where I normally leave it. I tried hard to remember what I did to the phone a moment ago before leaving a mall. It hit me in an instant that I left it on a chair by the mall exit where I sat for a few minutes. I start panicking when I realize my data will fall into strangers hands. I don't care much about the phone but the data is another story.

So I quickly made a U turn. That's when I saw the phone right in front of me, resting on the instrument panel, laughing at & mocking me for getting senile.

My Senior Moment

Since we're confessing our senior moments, here's mine. Two years ago, I saw a sale on 3597 refurbs for $119 with free shipping at GPS City. I liked the unit I already owned so much, I decided to buy a second as a spare. After it arrived, I went to put it in my GPS storage drawer only to discover there were already two 3597's in there! Now I have three! I have absolutely no recollection of buying the second unit!

It worked out for the best though since I can now keep one in each vehicle.

Still fresh memory

That was same deal I had as I could recall.
I did not get a $10 lower price, but am happy enough for my 3597.

No wonder!

No wonder there is such a short supply of 3597's! I guess we POI Factory members are 3597 hoarders! shock

New 3597's Still Out There

If you can afford one:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0AJ4UX8...

And

https://www.ebay.com/itm/291556382452?rmvSB=true

I'm not sure why anyone would pay that much for a new model when there are good used units out there like the one Alan found.

Same reason someone would

Same reason someone would buy one of these probably:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Microsoft-TrackBall-Explorer-1-...

I still have one from over a decade ago.. Works relatively well (for its age).

Have 2 new ones sitting in a box. Suppose if i'm ever hard up for cash I can sell 'em.

.

That is funny.

I should confess too

But I've forgotten what I was supposed to confess smile

Maybe we need a whole separate topic; "Senior Confessions"

No

No, I paid $300 and something for my 3597 shortly after they were released for sale in 2013.

Scarcity.

Scarcity makes prices go up, but you would have to find a pretty determined buyer to pay that much. Based on my poking around for used units on eBay, I think a complete used 3597 in descent shape is going in the $125 to $175 range.

zx..., I don't know what country you live in, but if you live in the U.S. would you (or anyone else reading this) consider selling one of your 3597's? You can reach me via my contact tab.

Hell no! They were going for $50-60 USD. Unfortunately MS discontinued them in the early 2000's. I find using a trackball far superior to a mouse. This one is really nice because it supports your whole hand.

And no, no 3597's here. The last unit I had was as nuvi 1490 which I sold 2 years ago. I'd look to ebay or craigslist. There's quite a few ebay listings from my casual search.

lucky for you, at least you

Ok, it turns out I'm not losing my mind after all. I left this post up on the computer screen this morning and my wife saw it when she went to look at her email. She filled me in on what happened with the extra 3597.

My brother bought a lot of five 3597 refurb units on eBay a couple of years ago. He knew how much I like the unit so he dropped one off at our house as a gift for my birthday. I was out of town for a few days so my wife put it with the other equipment in the GPS storage drawer. She just forgot to mention it.

I guess I can cancel my check up from the neck up!
