Starting this month If you need to apply or renew you driver License must do the following

1) Complete a form at the BMV near you.

2) your current drive license will be stamps with Holes and will be return to you

3) a New Temporary Certificate will be issue to you (that will be your new driver permit.

What state are you talking about?

My state doesn’t have appointments for licenses. Lines are rare.

New York state requirements

Does NY city have REAL ID? My drivers license is about due to be renewed and was wondering if I will be getting one (if they have it, do I need to request it or will they just give me a new one?)

I do NOT have a passport at this time (I was in the service and active Military cards can be used as a passport (that might have changed since I have been out too)

See:

I really like the link's images of standard, enhanced and Real ID license examples.

According to "additional info", sl4gps61 is in California like myself. Lines at the DMV look like lines at Disneyland park. It goes around the building in some places. We can easily spend the entire day at the DMV if we don't have an appointment.

State links

Here's a link on the topic for New York State:
https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/federal-real-id

It says NY state has been offering RealID compliant licenses only since October 30, 2017.

The NY DMV has additional pages on such topics as helping you decide which type of license you need or want, and specific details on what to bring.

I can't emphasize enough the need to obtain official guidance for your specific jurisdiction (usually your state motor vehicles people). They are not all the same.

I would guess every state

I would guess every state will have to abide by the federal law for 2022 so go to their website and for your state and search for real id

Why it's taken this long for

Why it's taken this long for the states to get their act together with this Real ID business, I'll never know.... what takes the time.

Ok

the sheer irony

When does it end? Will we need this to enter a mall next, or how about a movie theater? How far, in the interest of "security" do we go before all our personal liberties and freedoms are completely removed?

Is that 9/11 occurred, and supposedly borders were tightened up. The story of the lost boy who rode his bicycle into the USA and his parents couldn't find him, kinda illustrated that it was bogus that there was heightened security.

How many people have DLs in multiple states? DMVs can't even get all 50 states and DC on board to share info such as DUI.

So with all the rampant fraud that goes on and the Broward County antics, heck why not go back to the most secured doc, the US Passport? The people who are legit may kind of understand why we have to have it, the people who are not legit should be furious at the added inconvenience.

But no question in the end, it's more inconvenient for everybody, legit, and non.

Everytime I return to the USA on business, I kinda feel it's a disgrace that nobody is asking me any questions or if they do, they're not even listening to the answers. Ask me wth the purpose of my trip was, how long I was gone, what am I bringing in, it's your ****** job!

2020

I expect your 2022 was a typo and you meant to write 2020, October 1 to be exact.

Your statement that everyone should go to their state's wesbite can not be repeated often enough as it's where every person will find the exact procedure to follow. exclaim

My state, PA, had to repeal a law to be able to comply, privacy issues were part of the resistance.

Remember though, Real ID is not mandatory, it's only needed if you fly on domestic flights or enter a federal building that requires ID for access.

They did that back then. I was asked a few questions upon re-entering the US. What was the reason you visited that country? How long were you there? What are you doing in Los Angeles? That happened around Nov/Dec 2001.

It's different now. I just got back from vacation last May. This time the immigration officer doesn't ask a single question. He took our passport, stamped it, gave it back to us while saying "keep the line moving please". All that happens in 1-2 seconds per person. At customs, they waved us through while taking custom declaration forms from us.
