WebUpdater doesn't update maps but instead updates software, voices and such, assuming the new WebUpdater maintains these duties.

There is an alternative to Garmin Express for map updating but it is called GarminMapUpdater and should be used with caution on a 3597 unless a revised version is offered that fixes the issues below:

my desktop computer no longer runs Garmin Express as the net framework will not update due to some unknown gremlin I cannot fix...have been looking for an alternate to using my laptop but the updater is not it smile

Have you checked the requirements posted in the link that member Canuk posted in the original post?

Requirements for Version 257 of Webdater.
Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later is required. For the legacy version click here.
.NET framework 3.5 SP1 is required. A current version of .NET will be installed if needed.
Windows Media Player 11 or greater is required (a free download from Microsoft).
WebUpdater guides you through the process of updating the software in your GPS.
For some unit updates, this software will clear user memory, including 'Recent Finds' and 'Favorites.' Please back up important data such as routes, tracks, and waypoints to MapSource prior to updating.

WebUpdater is not compatible with Palm and Pocket PC devices, fixed-mount marine units, chartplotters, fishfinders and some discontinued units. For these products, please see the product's own page on garmin.com and look for the 'Software' link on the right-hand side.
WebUpdater does not perform Beta updates.
This download only supports Windows based computer systems. For the Mac download of WebUpdater click here.

Possibly you have already checked this out.
Quite unlikely. but the only thing I can see that that Net Framework or Media Player may be the issue you are experiencing.

I can no longer run Garmin Express on my desktop...have to use the laptop.
