TripAdvisor on Garmin Driveluxe 50LMTHD

Hey guys. I recently upgraded from my Garmin Nüvi 40lm to a Garmin Driveluxe 50LMTHD, as I found one used on eBay for $80. I saw that the newer 51 LMT-S model has since been released, and it has a few extra features like built-in WiFi and TripAdvisor data (otherwise, the two devices are almost identical). Rather than spending the big money for the 51 or settling for less features on my 50, I'm inquiring if there may be a way to get the TripAdvisor functionality on my 50 LMTHD. Surely, this has to be possible in some fashion. The TripAdvisor info could be really helpful to have, and why not have it if you can? Does anyone have any ideas or advice to share on this topic? I appreciate any and all feedback. Thanks for your time!

Welcome

Welcome to The Factory, CJ.

Do you have a smartphone? If so, look into the Smartphone Link app from Garmin which adds great traffic, weather and Foursquare to both the phone and DriveLuxe.

A Google search for comparing TripAdvisor to Foursquare will yield lots of info for you. This may be of use if, as I suspect, TripAdvisor cannot be added to your DriveLuxe 50.

Note that even a smartphone with very limited or expensive data allowances, the Garmin Smartphone Link app uses only a tiny amount of data. A search here at The Factory for info on the app can also be found and read.

Stick around, there's a lot of useful information here in the forums as well as the Custom POIs for speed and redlight cameras that you can add to either of your two devices.

PS: since the DriveLuxe is new to you, I'll guess that it comes with only 1-2 navigation voices, maybe Samantha (with text to speech) and Michelle (without TTS). Know that you can add several more voices so you can select the one you like best:

If you have a phone just put the app on your smart phone. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tripadviso...

Since this is a new device. Garmin support offers a lot of information. See https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?productID=523329 .Use the other tab to search a specific question. Be sure to check out the videos located on the left side of the screen.

Nice but not essential

I generally search on my phone using Yelp and TripAdvisor apps to search for ratings on restaurants and attractions when planning a trip. The built-In function is nice in that is calls up the local places that are rated. This is better than the long list of places that can appear on a search which are no longer in business or poorly rated. If you are used to using your phone to plan destinations then the TripAdvisor feature is a nice-to-have but not a must-have. If you have no smart phone then I would give it more value.
