Icons

I downloaded a bunch of POI's to my GPS over the weekend (127,000+ to be exact). Everything went fine with the exception of two icons. I created a 48 BMP for Key Bank and I used the Auto Repair icon that is found in the icon section of this forum. However, neither one of these would load on the GPS. (The only thing I get is a small square dot.) I tried to make the Key Bank icon larger, that didn't work. I tried making it smaller, no luck there either. However, if I used the Bank 48 BMP for the Key Bank file, it would work. That let's me know that I don't have hidden extensions. (I have also checked for that and I don't have any of those.) This has me baffled. I created a Key Bank icon that I created on my other computer that crashed and it was installed on the GPS. I just can't figure why I can't get it to work now on the new system. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. I know with the vast amount of talent that is at the Factory that someone has the answer. I am just curious as to what that answer is.

Well, that's interesting

I don't have an answer but do have some thoughts. First, I see that you recently updated a POI file (plus mp3 and wav) for the LCNB Bank. These files contain numerals (1500) and that will create a problem for using the POI file unless the filename is changed by the downloading user to remove the numerals from the filename. I suggest removing the numerals from the filenames.

___

Now to your problem. Is this the auto repair icon you tried that won't install? http://www.poi-factory.com/node/23081? Just checking in case others plan to try seeing how it works for them.

Regarding your small square dot for your KeyBank and auto repair. Is this the default "icon" (generally referred to folks as a black dot) used by Garmin devices when no custom icon is included or is somewhat larger and really a square? What color is it?

Can you describe how you made your KeyBank 48x48 pixel icon: color depth, chosen colors, etc?

Obviously, with all your other loaded POI and icon files, you know what you're doing so there must be something going on specifically with your two problem icons. I asked about your substituted small square compared to the default Garmin dot icon when no custom bmp is loaded. If it is the default Garmin dot, it could mean that the filename of the bmp isn't an exact match to the csv or gpx POI file or that the extension is not .bmp but rather a jpg or something. I hate even suggesting these but I'm at a loss and as confused as you regarding their failures. sad I ask about your making your own KeyBank icon in case you're using colors or a color depth that others have found to be a problem—although that doesn't explain why it'd appear as a small black square instead.

Now let's hope someone else has better ideas than mine...

Just as a suggestion, use this on line resize and converter to make your two icons. See http://convert-my-image.com/ImageConverter . Here are some samples of icons to try.Just right click mouse on icon and select save as. Most are png files. For Key Bank see https://www.google.com/search?q=key+bank+icons&tbm=isch&tbo=... and for Auto Repair see https://www.google.com/search?q=auto+repair+icons&tbm=isch&t...

Select Bmp on the converter, top left before selecting convert.Let us know the results once you put them with the csv or gpx file. Be sure to name the same except for the extensions.

In answer to CraigW's question....

Yes, it was showing the small black dot. When I created the Key Bank icon it was a red key with a white background.I don't know why it doesn't work but it doesn't. I guess it is possible that I actually created a jpg as opposed to a bmp file. I have changed so many things in looking for a solution that it is not possible for me to go back and check to see if that is what I did. By the way! How do I remove the numbers from the LCNB file? I actually put the numbers in there because I had it set to alert at 1500 feet, but I can see how that could cause an issue. However, I don't know how to remove them. I have tried a couple of things, but I couldn't get any of them to work. If you could give me some instructions, I will gladly remove them.

Now, on to Charlesd45. Your ideas worked like a charm. I am glad to report that the Key Bank icon has been fixed and it is now proudly showing on the GPS along with the Auto Repair icon. This program worked like magic. I picked the icons that I wanted, saved them and then did the conversion. I like this program so well that I have saved it to my computer.

Thanks again to both of you guys. I knew someone would have an answer. I really appreciate your efforts in helping me out on this. I was extremely baffled as to why I couldn't get these things to work. confused

Congratulations

Glad you have everything working now. I also have this programed saved as a favorite. Don't make as many icons like I did in the past, but keep this converter and resizer just in case.

Rename Original File

You would have to go back to the original file on your computer. Rename it, then go back through the upload process.
