I couldn't believe the e-mail promotion I got from Amazon today with the subject line "Garmin Nuvi 780 Portable GPS..." for $304.99!
Really? A new nuvi 780? $305!? That device came out in 2007! Well, it is bundled with a bean bag mount, screen protectors and a WHOPPING 2 GB SD card! AND GUESS WHAT ELSE ... a MSN Direct traffic receiver! Of course it comes preloaded with City Navigator North America NT map. I wonder what map version that will be (2008 I presume)? No lifetime map updates of course, as Garmin didn't offer a lifetime map subscription until 2009. I wonder if Garmin will honor what they then offered .... the NuMaps Gaurantee, a one-time map update to the latest version if you updated in the first 90 days. Oh wait! ... nope, 2019.11 won't fit on that 2GB card!
With some concern about address spoofing and possible malware, I checked the message headers and it did indeed come from Amazon. So I couldn't resist and clicked on the link. Here it is folks: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CWP4M4/ref=pe_231336....
Only 17 left in stock! Get one while you can! But you probably better plan on making a call to Garmin Customer Support to repair that dead battery under warranty!
Well
there is a sucker born every minute.
On the same page is a newer Garmin 5" 58 LMT for $ 79.93
Nuvi 2797LMT, DriveSmart 50 LMT-HD, Using Windows 10. DashCam A108C with GPS.
Amusing Price?
Although it's listed on Amazon, the vendor is a Amazon market place vendor(Firemall LLC). The best of luck to anyone foolish enough paying $305.99 for a GPS that was released on 8/2007.
What a joke, how is it possible they are advertising the unit as NEW.
Amazon needs to screen their vendors more carefully.
Look at other vendors advertising a 780 on Amazon for USED Units.

New.
I don't doubt that they are "new" ... probably some forgotten inventory that was recently discovered or sold from a store closing. Being bundled with a 2 GB SD card certainly makes it seem like it was bundled/packaged 10 years ago. Our friend T923347 pointed out in another forum that Garmin still shows this item on their web site with the original MSRP of $599.99! I suppose if the seller is uninformed about the low street value for these old electronics, they might have used the Garmin MSRP to set the price. It will be fun to see if the quantity of the item goes down, indicating that someone bought it ... maybe as a collectors item?
I too was surprised that Amazon sent this out as the "feature" item on their e-mail ad. I suppose the seller paid Amazon to feature that item.
In any case it is an interesting item to be marketing in 2018.

New nuvi 780
Interestingly, there is a "new" nuvi 780 being offered on eBay right now for a more reasonable $24.99 or Best Offer.

It looks like the used ones are listing in the $20 to $50 range.

Hmm, a "new" anicent product but from a zero feedback seller. That's issue #1. Issue #2 is that it'd come without lifetime map updates and I wonder what map version it has...and haven't the standalone lifetime update subscriptions gone the way of the dodo?
Map Version.
My guess it would be CN NA 2008. It could possibly be 2009.
My son is still using his nuvi 755T with the original CN NA 2009 map (that is why he is getting the DriveLuxe 50 for his birthday)
Although we sometimes complain that map changes are so slow, try using CN NA 2009 for a while and you will appreciate your 2019.11! Ten years of changes in roads, POI's, speed limits, etc. makes a HUGE difference.

Out of curiosity, I contacted the Seller who confirmed the item has never been powered up and who responded very promptly. I wonder if it'd be given the one free map update that Garmin offers to new items...
Wow!

That Garmin page shows 1 to 3 business days availability! Do you suppose Garmin really still has them in stock?
Edit: Nope! I see now that there is no "Buy Now" or
"Find a Dealer" link.

Good thing I purchased a life-time update subscription for my ancient 260. I still keep it updated with new maps.
Even though I have not used the little guy stays for quite some time, it brings back fond memories.
Lifetime map update subscriptions.
They are getting scarce, but iSave claims to still have them: https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-n%C3%BCMaps-Lifetime-America-U...

Definitely a puzzle.
I find it interesting that the 27 Amazon reviews and the 5 questions for the product are dated between 2011 and 2015. Strange for a 2007 product. I don't remember the 780 being available for than long.
It rivals the length of time the very popular new model 3597's were on the market.
Chinese GPS's - What A Deal

If you click on “Sponsored product related to this product”, you will see 4 vendors selling GPS’s from the 60.00 range. Here is one of them selling for $61.99.

I wonder what the source is for the map updates.

Storage Locker Find
Someone probably bought a lot of electronics from a liquidation / Bankruptcy auction. They then Googled what it cost when it came out and now are trying to recoup their investment.
Nuvi 780
FWIW, The 780 was a pretty good unit in its day.
I remember my 750
My 750 was a great unit but he screen was so snall compared to what I use today.

we still have and use a 755 and 765
And guess what, still original batteries. I use my 765 almost daily in my Nissan Frontier GPS Flip Tray connection
Nuvi 780
The nuvi 780 was identical to the more popular nuvi 760. The only difference was that the 780 was bundled with the GDB-50 power cord/traffic receiver for MSN Direct traffic, while the 760 came with the GTM-20 power cord/traffic receiver for standard FM TMC traffic.
The MSN Direct service was discontinued several years ago.
