Can anyone recommend some sources for a factory refurb 2599 LMTHD unit?

Try These

Although there are no Nuvi 2599 refurbs at present on these sites, a few good ones to watch are:

Factory outlet store

https://g.factoryoutletstore.com/cat/1642/Garmin-Automotive-...

Walmart

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Refurbished-Refurbished-Garmin-Nu...

or the GPS store

https://www.thegpsstore.com/Search/Search.aspx?keywords=nuvi...

If you do an occasional Google search, refurb units occasionally show up on other sites like Kmart.com

http://www.kmart.com/en_us/yikes.html?from=PDP&for=SPM871972...

Or Best Buy.com

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/searchpage.jsp?st=garmin+nuvi+2...

Right now, the only ones I see available are on Amazon:

If you are getting a refurb

Refurb units only have to pass the quick test that is built into device. Then they figure it is ok. (No field tests are done)

Sorry if I mislead

With the exception of Amazon, none of the sites I listed in my earlier post have the 2599 refurb in stock. I was just suggesting them as possible sites to watch.

The $120 Amazon price isn't bad though. I see they are out of stock now but plan to have them in again on 3/1.

No, it was just a link for another source to look for a refurb unit.

Backup for 3597LMTHD

Not very happy with Nav in 2017 VW CC. Maps haven't been updated since Mar 2016. No response from VW on when or if.
Gave my wife the 3597 for her to use so thinking about another but looks like most of current ones are low(480 or less resolution). Is that a concern?
Suggestions for even a refurb that is currently available?
I have a custom map in iQue that is 12-14 months old that I keep for emergency use.

Driveluxe 50LMTHD

@cassel ... I recently bought a refurbished DriveLuxe 50LMTHD on Amazon (sold by iSave) for $114.95. I got it as a birthday gift for my son. I just checked and they still have them in stock.

I also have a 3597LMTHD, and the DriveLuxe 50 is about as close to the 3597 as any unit you can buy. There are a couple of things I like better on the DriveLuxe, but it has one drawback over the 3597. And that is that the magnetic mount on the DriveLuxe does not have a speaker like the 3597 does. So you are stuck listening to the internal speaker which doesn't have as much volume and is somewhat tinnier sounding. But otherwise, the DriveLuxe is an excellent choice.

I also

I also have a refurb DriveLuxe 50 and a Nuvi 3597. I normally have the sound muted when I use these devices so not having the speaker in the 50'd mount isn't a big concern for me.

I miss the DEM file on the 50 which the 3597 has to display changes in terrain when viewing the map screen, but since this is mostly eye candy, one learns to live without it.

Refurbished?

Any issues with map updates? what warranty did it have from the seller?

Look for Factory Refurbished. From the earlier posted sources and available today:

Factory Outlet: Includes One Year Manufacturer's Warranty
Walmart: 90 day warranty
Amazon: Depends on Seller chosen and whether New, Used, or Refurbed

For earlier links not shown here, the 2599 is not available right now.

DriveLuxe 51?

Are you familiar with what changed on the newer model?

DriveLuxe 51.

I think two of the main updates Garmin did to the DriveLuxe 51 over the DriveLuxe 50 are adding WiFi for updates and increasing the internal memory from 8 GB to 16 GB. They removed the HD Traffic receiver.

In my opinion, the additional memory is nice and eliminates the need for a SD card, but SD cards are cheap, so not that big of a deal. The WiFi update capability is OK, especially if you don't have a computer you can plug into. If you have a computer, Garmin Express works just fine for updates and the WiFi is just a gimmick (again, just my opinion).

What warranty did iSave offer? Looks like they are still available.

Refurb warranty.

iSave doesn't offer the warranty. It is a factory refurb, so the warranty is from Garmin and is for 1 year, same as a new device.

This is the 4th Garmin factory refurb I have purchased. I have never had to make a warranty claim on any of them. So I can't say if there are any difficulties in getting warranty service on the refurb devices.

3597 vs DriveLux

Did you try the DriveLux out before giving to your son?
You said you liked a couple thing better?

3597 vs DriveLuxe 50

I still have the DriveLuxe as my son's birthday isn't until June. I was afraid the refurbs would be sold out by June, so I bought it early.

The main things I like better on the DriveLuxe over the 3397 is that the DriveLUxe has a few more configuration options ... things you can turn on or off according to your preferences. It also has driver alerts (configurable) for things like curves, animal crossings, etc. And it has built-in FourSquare POi's.

On the other hand, the things I like better on the 3597 are the 3D terrain view and the extra speaker in the mount. The 3597 is also a little thinner which makes it seem a little more sleek and light weight.

All in all, they are both excellent and very similar in design and function. I slightly prefer the 3597, mostly because of the speaker, but would be happy owning either one. IMO, these two models are the "cream of the crop" of all the automotive devices Garmin has made.
