DriveSmart 50LMTHD - Is it Just Me or What ?

Just took delivery of a factory refurb'd DriveSmart 59LMTHD with 1yr warranty from Garmin.

Gave it a full charge using Garmin AC wall charger then powered unit on to check out it's features.

First thing I noticed was lack of "snap/pop" of colors on display. Adjusting screen brightness makes screen lighter or darker but of course does nothing to improve screen contrast.

My newly "bricked" Nuvi 2599LMTHD or Are th my operable old Nuvi 1490LMT makes screen on the DRiveSmart "pale" in comparison...no pun intended.

Do any of you guys have experience with DriveSmart series ? Is it normal for their screens to look washed out ?

I'm close to returning unit to Garmin for exchange or refund...what do you think ?

Also, do any of you know if screen on DriveSmart is glass or acrylic ? Hopefully it's glass as I can't see touchscreen made of plastic holding up to the challenge.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Well ...

There's certainly a difference in the screen of the Drive series compared with earlier nuvi ones but overall they're sharper and now I'm used to it it's not a problem. Side by side you can see the difference but in use it's great.

Map Themes - do they really help ?

Have you experimented with changing Map Themes to help improve screen contrast and improve readability of maps ?

Screen does seem smart but colors look flat or dull to me. Is this your take on Drive series ?

I had the same feeling

when I bought my DriveSmart 60. The waters are a much lighter blue. I changed the Map Theme to, I think, English, and that helped somewhat.

Contrast Setting needed

Wouldn't it be nice if Garmin provided means of adjusting color contrast similar to ability to change screen brightness via "slider" ?

Sure would be nice if Garmin had provided some form of info on Map Themes rather than having to stumble upon them by accident. Ability to change Map Themes does seem to help with issue of dull/flat colors but as far as I'm concerned it's no cure all.

BTW...do you think screen on DriveSmart is real glass like cellphones or is acrylic (aka plastic) ?

Don't have one

But I have noticed that if the screen is glass, Garmin certainly touts it in their advertising.

I made a theme some time ago. I made it for my 2597 and use it on a DriveSmart 60. If you want to try it send me an email to my contact and I will send it to you.

If changing themes for visual clarity, the "narvick" theme could be looked into. It's discussed here:

jjen, it looks like you chose to set up your account here without a Contact tab. You can go into your account and add it if you want to.

Added A Screen Protector

Same for me. I even took an extra un-used screen protector for an iPad and cut out a screen protector for my unit and it still produces a very decent display.

I have it turned on in edit but it doesn't seem to appear. I don't see contact for Cruise either.

It's there

I looked at the Drivesmart 60 with the Garmin theme, I see your problem.

I had modified an Osterreich theme. Except Interstates are red, water is dark blue, parks are darker green, airports are more visible and other changes. Routing is blue.

Just turned it on

Just turned my Contact info on...please feel free to contact me. Thanks

I don't know how frequently emails are sent through contact. It seems like it has been a long time. I will try again soon.

It should only take a minute

It should only take a minute or so, if the email address is correct,
