Routing options with toll and without on 3597

Is there a way to have the GPS show routing with and without toll roads, or at least ask if you want to use toll roads when routing.

I'm new to Garmin and my TomTom would always ask if I want to use toll roads.

it's binary

With Garmin, it's a binary choice as toll roads are either on or off.

Welcome to POI Factory. This is from Garmin help for avoidances you can select for the unit you have listed.

Navigational avoidances on automotive devices.
Garmin devices have an Avoidance menu where you can select various options that will adjust how your device routes you. Items with a check mark beside them will be avoided whenever possible.

Note: Custom road avoidances may need to be re-set after each map update. Custom area avoidances should remain accurate and intact after updating maps on the device.

To locate the Avoidance menu:1

Touch Settings
Touch Navigation
Touch Avoidances
Touch the desired Avoidance to enable it.
Repeat the steps above to disable the checked Avoidance.

Available avoidances:
U-Turns – Avoids calculating routes that require a U-turn.
Highways or Motorways – Avoids highways, interstates, freeways, motorways, and other major routes.
Toll Roads or Tolls and Fees – Avoids toll roads and certain specified congestion zones.
Traffic – Avoids traffic if a quicker route is available.
Must be actively receiving traffic with the included traffic receiver1.
Ferries – Avoids routes that require a ferry crossing.
Carpool Lanes or Car Share Lanes – Avoids lanes designated specifically for carpooling .
Unpaved Roads – avoids unpaved roads (gravel, dirt, etc.)
Custom Avoidances – Feature available on some devices that will allow you to select specific areas or lengths of road to avoi.d
Note that devices will only avoid selected items when it is possible. For example, if you have U-Turns selected as an avoidance the device may still direct you to make a U-Turn if an alternate route is not available.

1.Disabling the traffic avoidance does not disable traffic alerts from appearing on the device; however, it will not take the reported traffic incident into account when calculating routes.

On recent Garmins it's not binary. Under avoidances you can set it to avoid, allow or ask.

We recently passed through (actually bypassed around) Atlanta and my DriveSmart 61 told me that there were tolls on the route, asking if I wanted to look for an alternative. When I replied "Yes" it told me there was no way to avoid tolls.

As we followed the I-85/I-285 route, we were instructed to enter the HOV lane, which required a small toll (less than a dollar, as I recall). Since we didn't have an EZpass and didn't want to slow for a toll booth, we simply avoided the HOV lane.

No tolls.

Clearly, the Garmin never considered that as an alternative!

Tolls

Garmin may also take toll setting very literally. Once when I didn't realize it was set to avoid, the routing wanted to take through three states to avoid a toll bridge!

Another Factor

More and more "Cashless" toll roads are being added every year. You can be setting yourself up for a hefty fine if you blindly follow the routing of your GPS without excluding toll roads.

Even if you subscribe to an electronic toll collection service like Ezpass, Sun Pass, Mn Pass, etc, they are not universally accepted in all states.

When planning a cross country trip, it might be a good idea to enter the states you will be passing through on this website:

https://www.gsa.gov/acquisition/products-services/transporta...

Links are provided to electronic toll collection systems in those states and their compatibility with other systems.

Try getting into or out of canada

Just try to get into or out of Canada with toll road avoidance.

I couldn't understand why Garmin wanted to route me through Montreal to get from Michigan to Kitchener Ontario. Border crossing were almost all tolls. LOL.

Took me a bit to figure out.

Custom Avoidances

Custom Avoidance can be created to avoid specific toll roads, bad roads or areas you just want to avoid, etc.

I had the same issue a few years back. While stopping outside of Niagra Canada on a motorcycle trip I hit Go Home to Western PA. The zumo 665 locked up while calculating. I had no Tolls and something else checked. Had to soft reboot to clear the lockup.

I've had 'ASK' act like

I've had 'ASK' act like 'Allow' on a couple of occasions -- Enough for it to not be a 'fluke'.... So unless I know I'm going to need tolls in advance, I set it for 'Avoid'...

But you must remember in advance to set it to 'Allow'.... As -- One time in San Francisco, with our Hotel in Oakland, It tried to route me via San Jose, a 4 or so hour trip increase... to avoid a Toll on a bridge. Then, even after changing the avoidance to 'Allow'... I had to cancel the route.... Then ask for the route again after setting was changed.... For it to work correctly...
660 or 2689LMT
