China fears spying capability of autonomous cars, even cameras and GPS

The Financial Times carries a substantial story today which states that foreign manufacturers are facing serious obstacles even in doing testing and preparation toward autonomous vehicle deployment in China apparently triggered by Chinese government concerns of spying.

Specifically, the use of onboard cameras and the recording of GPS coordinates by vehicles involved in generating the high-accuracy maps needed faces robust objection by the Chinese government.

Funny thing is, I'm pretty sure there are quite a few Teslas driving around in China. Guess what they carry and do.

Google StreetView images aren't available for China.
