Icon Library -Resize Icons

I have downloaded an Icon from the Icon Library and using "Paint Software" the size of this icon is 29 x 24 pixels, which is too small on my Nuvi 2689 screen.

When I resize to 48 x 40 pixels in Paint, the image looses some of its sharpness.

I am wondering which of the following *.bmp formates you you recommend to increase the clearity.

Mono Chrom BitMap
16 color BitMap
24-bit Color Bitmap
256 Color BitMap

I get the following message with each format "The color quality maybe reduced, if you were to save picture in this format."

Is there another picture software program which I can use?
Would an Icon saves as PNG file work in my GPS?
Can PIO Factory create a different icon with an increased size (48 pixels)?

This is something I'd also

This is something I'd also like to know. Sometimes the icons on the map are very small and difficult to see.

I can't

I can't speak specially about the OP's model Nuvi but for most of the newer model devices I have used, you need to save the icons as 256 color.

Icons

"Growing" a bitmapped icon is going to create a less sharp image and while some may be acceptable, others are not. When I moved up to a nuvi with a larger screen, I tinkered some with enlarging icons and found that in some cases, I needed to edit or create my own larger one. A good example of this is the Choice Hotel icons from The Choice Hotel POI page. The original 22x19 tiny icon was terrible when trying to enlarge it. I found that unacceptable and tinkered with it to enlarge it to 48x48, cover up the original light colored text, then added in a large font, CH. I see that someone else also offered an enlarged icon but it's too fuzzy and low contrast for my taste:

The warning of reduced color quality mentioned in the first post is not related to sharpness. And please, for folks creating or modifying icons to look good in a larger size, please consider offering your icon here at The Factory:

I must say that I chuckle every now and then on TV shows where a computer tech is asked to sharpen an image to identify a license plate number or some such thing.

Maximum Compatibility

For maximum compatibility between devices, 256 color is safest. We know it works on very old devices like the Streetpilot C-series as well as the newest Drive units. If I'm not mistaken, Garmin's guidance on the subject also mentions no more than 256 colors.

However, I've tested increased color depths and discovered both 16-bit and 24-bit color display properly on both my 200W and 1300LM, without any degradation in performance or appearance. In fact, my personal icon set for my POI files uses 24-bit color. The only caveat in doing 24-bit color icons is that you have to color the background magenta after creating the icon using 24-bit color, or else the fringes of the image will be an off shade of magenta instead of white.

I always use...

...256 color bitmap. I have created several icons and I always use 256. Some of them, I have submitted, others I haven't submitted due to trademark restrictions. I use them on my devices but I cannot publish them. I asked one source for permission to publish their icon and they advised me that I would have to submit all kinds of paperwork. I decided that it wasn't worth it and I am just using it for my own use.
