Stephen Hawking says artificial intelligence could 'destroy' humanity

Artificial intelligence could sideline and “destroy” its human creators if engineers cannot get a grip on the ethics behind it, Stephen Hawking has warned.

Speaking at the Web Summit in Lisbon, the theoretical physicist said AI has the potential to be the best or worst thing humanity has ever seen and the scary reality is we just don’t know which yet.

“We cannot know if we will be infinitely helped by AI or ignored by it and sidelined, or conceivably destroyed by it,” he said.

Actually, there's a lot to consider when "AI" begins making autonomously (or are they ignominiously)decisions for us.

And, many others agree with him.

He does have credibility. I

He does have credibility. I tend to find a second source of information and items i'm concerned about.

Point of no return...

It already has...

Every invention "has the

Every invention "has the potential to be the best or worst thing humanity has ever seen".

Not only AI but take a look at the depth of electronic applications that now RULE our daily lives. These things are basically just computers sifting and sorting our data so some other computer can use it, store it, and keep track of us, and the scary reality is that most of humanity just doesn’t care.

YEAP

It is Cyberdyne System Skynet fault

We need to rethink...

We need to re-visit what we have accomplished so far. We tend to let the machines do our work even thinking......

He may very well be right,

He may very well be right, though nothing will change, we will continue to innovate and invent, even with the best intentions, we are often harmed by our own creations.

People

have dumbed down long ago.
Can't tell the difference when writing between there an their or where and were. Seem to think that a lot is one word (alot). So many more examples. I wasn't even raised in the English language.

let's be fair....

I've created a txt on my phone, caught it to reword my txt's before I sent them so I fix them and then when I push send AUTOCORRECT gets busy and adds, deletes or otherwise annotates my text because it knows much more about what I was trying to say than I did!

While there have been some interesting aspects to it's reworking of my txt's, when I was working, I refused to use txts.. and if someone wanted to communicate with me, it was either done via voice or in person as I refused to take the chance AUTOCORRECT would reword a txt to introduce something that could be construed as being offensive.

Humans

Many humans seem bent on destroying themselves today. Drugs, pollution, nuclear weapons, crazy governments... Who needs AI to do it for them?
