Just updated my Nuvi's Voices and it made me think about space. On my old 650 I was running out of room so I deleted the files for all the Voices I never used (along with help files).
Any reason NOT to delete unused Voices & Keyboards from my 2699? They seem to range in size from 18k to 899k. I noticed that Keyboards tend to be ~17k, but the ones I don't use add up.
I have ~600mb free now and I haven't yet gotten a micro sd card.
Just wondering what the collective thinks.

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31186 for instructions on what you can delete.

Thanks, I think that is the thread I used years ago to delete from my 650. I was just posting to see if anyone is doing this on the 'modern' units. With the addition of an sd card space isn't really an issue any more I guess. But I'm still thinking about deleting some files I'll never use.

The same files apply to other units. I have everything on my 2597 deleted as far as Voices,Text,Vehicles and Help folders . Looks like I can go a few more updates before needing the SD card.

What are the Text files?
What are the Text files? Whick are the English-US files that I should keep?
Backup.
Just make sure you make a backup before you delete things ... you can always get back to where you were if something isn't working right.
On my 3597 in the Text folder, I kept everything that starts with en_ and deleted everything else. In the Help folder, I kept the folders and contents for American_English, British_English, Images, and file HelpDefTable.xml.
Hope that helps.

Cars, voices and languages
Yep, I've only got one voice on my unit, and have deleted as many files as I could. I do have several vehicles on my unit, two that match our actual vehicles, and a few others for fun. I use SD cards for topographic maps pretty much exclusively.

I was just reading another thread:
where in #8 the poster asked "... is there a English US glx file in the Text folder?" and the answer was: "No. That file is a default file and cannot be removed or added. It is stored in memory inaccessible to the user to ensure there is always one text file available."
So is there any reason to keep any Text files if you only use English?
I did delete all but en_ files from Voice and Help.
But my vehicle is the speeder from Luke Skywalker (Star Wars) that I had on my 650. Found that 9 years ago and still like it best.

As covered in the FAQ make backup before making any changes. That said back even to my 265 I deleted my text files based on a similar post a long time back saying the same reason as you posted. But again cover all the bases and make a backup. Every maps date I do a complete backup on the computer and a portable memory stick.

charlesd45,
My reference to that link was not because of lack of backup, I ran across it looking for what Text fields are. I did read somewhere that they can be opened with a text editor, haven't tried that yet.
The final tally of space saving is 341mb that's from deleting Voice, Text, Help, and Keyboard files that are not English. Well most of the files, I do have a few left, the unit works fine, so I think I'm done playing with.
@asallwey
Make sure you dont't have any extra vehicles files on the device.
