Dumb guy question - GPS, GPSes, GPSr

Ok, I've only been here three weeks, so maybe I haven't learned the secret handshake yet. I have a burning question.

Why do some refer to a GPS or GPSes (plural) as GPSr?

I know it's a flock of geese, murder of crows, school of fish, etc.. But what's a bunch of GPSes? A GPSr?

Inquiring minds want to know! smile

Add me to that dumb guy list too

I only started 3 days ago...so I am curious too!

GPSr stands for GPS Receiver.

It's considered "more correct" in some circles, and some people are just in the habit of using it.

Nothing wrong with calling them a GPS. It's just not as "technically" correct.

GPSR

Global Positioning Satellite Receiver

Wow, ok.

I guess I don't hang in the right circles. Or maybe I do? wink

I bought my first GPSr (Garmin GPS-45XL) sometime in the mid 90's, have been a ham since earlier than that, and had never heard the term.

I am a geek, so I guess I should use the more technically correct term.

I feel enlightened!

Thanks.

You may not have before...

Global Positioning System

Technically GPS stands for 'Global Positioning System'; so hanging an 'r' at the end would then be 'Global Positioning System Receiver'. Hanging a 's' at the end would be ''Global Positioning Systems'.

Now I feel important, knowing I have a GPSr and not just a GPS.

never heard of GPSr before until now

It's good to know that I own a GPSr unit, not the expensive GPS (referring to satelite) grin Before this post, I've always been referring to my unit as a GPS unit.

I really like driving alone with my girl. Now that I have a GPS it's like having another person in the car telling me where to go. My wife tells me to turn on Main street, if my mother is in the car she tells me to turn on Broadway and my GPS tell me how to really get there but the family insists that ther way is better. It's so nice to drive with me and my 670 AKA My Girl.

Although it is technically

Although it is technically correct, I've always thought "GPSr" was gratuitously correct. Beyond this particular board (even on other GPS forums), I never see that term.

The way I see it, my computer is an editing System, my stereo is an audio System, my TV is a video System, and my Garmin is a global positioning System. It might not be *the* Global Positioning System consisting of multiple satellites. But my C530 is no less a "system" than my computer is.

So while I might technically have a "GPSr", the only thing gained by saying the "r" is that I'll have to explain myself to anybody who doesn't frequent this board.

Older GP

Could GPSr be short for Grand Pa Senior? I will have to try that on my Grand kids since they all have two Grand Pa's.
