Nuvi 2595LMT Traffic coverage

Hey all,
Does anyone know the coverage of Garmin's traffic service in Canada?.. forgive me I'm as still new to this whole traffic service thing but my unit has the built in receiver as apposed to it being on the power cable (if that makes a difference)
Planning a trip East into Manitoba and Ontario and would love this feature to work.

Thanks in advance! wink

I

I think this is about the most complete list of the areas covered by the traffic service that comes with your 2595:

If you have a smartphone you may get more coverage using Garmin's Smartphone Link app. The available traffic data may also be more accurate using this app.

No stalls no accidents!

Cheers for that link, I had not seen this yet..looks like Manitoba is a no go but Ontario is covered.
Unfortunately I don't have a smart phone that supports this SmartPhone link that Garmin offers..oh well.
Thanks again!

Coverage

Hate to disappoint you but until you get near Toronto or what is known as the GTA you will not have any coverage anywhere. You won't get anything along TC-1.

And even then in the GTA it is dependent on FM stations getting the info to put it out for the FM receiver to pick it up. Basically that happens with some major traffic hold-ups, crashes etc.

Good to know, not disappointed nor surprised actually..I always had great success with simple traffic updates from local radio stations when we're traveling anyways.
Thanks for the update!

FYI

FYI, when I lived in the GTA the radio station at 680 AM had regular traffic updates (it's an all news station). Seemed to be about the best source back then.

Not sure where your planning on travelling in Ontario but the traffic service is available on your GPS in the Hamilton/Niagara Falls area, Kitchener/ Waterloo, London, Windsor and Ottawa. Can't guaranty the quality of the service in these areas.

I wonder?

If with that horrible truck accident near Port Hope if the Garmin would have had something on it.
BTW: I find 640 AM and 1010 AM have traffic every 10-15 minutes.

The

The reason I mentioned 680 AM is that it's a 24 hour news station and has traffic every 10 minutes on the 1's (:01,:11,:21) 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The traffic reports don't get missed by some other programming taking priority, like those other stations tend to have (or at least did). wink

You have to use Smartphone

You have to use Smartphone Link app on your smartphone to get the best traffic information. FM traffic is not that accurate because it is very slow and you will get it if only FM station is carrying it in the area.
I always have Smartphone Link traffic and it is quite good. It helps me to get the accurate arrival time which is quite good most of the times.
Radio traffic also helps because all of sudden lane closures due accidents take time to get updated on GPS.

That's fine and dandy for you to say YOU HAVE to use a smartphone.

Are you volunteering to pay someones fee for a data plan ???

I am just telling the reality. Why should I pay for someone's data plan? Because I said, Live traffic is better? I am not a salesman for any company. So I am not selling any data plans or phone plans for any company. It is my honest observation and I am using Smartphone link app for more than 5 years. I am using Garmin for more than 10 years so I have seen FM traffic and digital traffic so I know the difference. I hope I made my point clear?

Data and smart traffic

There is a lot of misinformation regarding the amount of data smart traffic uses. First off, the amount of data consumed is minimal, you probably wouldn't even notice it as it would compare closely to the amount needed to send and receive a couple emails for an average trip. It is also known that there are relatively few people that now experience data overages unless you are addicted to viewing movies on your smartphone and need to watch 2 or 3 per day. It's either movies or playing Farmville that consume the data (well, let's not forget the live streaming to Facebook). For the average adult, we don't notice any change to our data consumption using smart traffic but there are those that like to believe the horror stories from 10 years ago about running up cell phone bills in the thousands of dollars because of data overages. But then those were also the days when plans rarely provided more than a gig of data. The average plan now is at least 5 and many more are even greater for just the basic service.

Nuvi 2595LMT Ontario Traffic Coverage

Garmin traffic coverage in Ontario is limited to Ottawa and Toronto areas.

Smartphone Link uses very little data on my iPhone and DriveAssist 50 or my 2595 (when I had an Android phone).

Here are some links to current coverage maps:

Data usage is minimal. For instance, I made a trip to Florida a few months back and this is what I observed. I used 10.3 MB of data driving back from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Not to bad at all. Looks like SmartLink is pretty efficient in the data department. Total of about 15 hours of drive time.

Thanks all! Appreciate all

Thanks all!
Appreciate all the input and advice, as stated earlier I don't have a smart phone but if that day ever comes I will now consider myself now informed on the matter.
I will mark this thread as solved ( if I can do that on here? ) and if so..how how would I go about doing this??...can't for the life of me find this option.

Cheers
