How do you down load map using wireless wi-fi?

Drive 51/61 series.

On the higher end 2017 Drive 51/61 models, the WiFi receiver and the update software is built into the device ... no computer necessary for updates. The basic Drive 51 model does not have the wi-fi.

Garmin Video

Here's a video that shows how to update wirelessly.

WiFI update.

Thanks for the video link Canuk. I have not had a Drive x1 in hand to see exactly how the WiFi update process works. It looks pretty strait forward. One thing that was interesting was seeing them plug into USB power without going into MTP/MS mode. I wonder if there is a setting for that too or if they have just made the USB power connection more reliable than it is on some of the older devices.

I do find the Garmin WiFi capability somewhat of a "yawner", especially since you still need the USB connection for power ... it's just as easy to plug into the computer as into a power supply. I suppose it would allow you to update maps while the unit is mounted in your car while in the garage. It also doesn't tie up your computer and avoids Garmin Express glitches. I suppose there is some portion of the customer base that has only a smartphone and no computer, so this feature would serve them well. Now, if they would add other capabilities to the WiFi, like an option to mount the device as a network drive, then there could be some other possibilities, like installing POI's or routes while the device is in your garage.

It should make map updates

It should make map updates faster provided they are using wifi AC for faster downloads. This should save time because without this feature, you computer downloads the maps first then transfers them to your GPS device so it takes longer time. By using this new wifi interface you will save the computer download time because maps will be downloaded direct on the device.

Using your computer you can opt to just download to the device. Then it will not download to the computers hard drive.

When using thee computer the files do download to the computer where they are placed in temporary storage on the hard drive, assembled and then transferred to the device. The cleanup process is supposed to remove the files but doesn't always complete the job correctly and it leaves "artifacts" behind. What you are thinking of is the copying of the map file to permanent storage where it is used by Garmin's other programs.

Thanks Box Car. You are

Thanks Box Car. You are absolutely right. When you select to install maps to device that does not mean maps are being transferred direct to the device. They are downloaded on your computer first in a temporary place.

Vehicle..

I wish my vehicles maps upgraded via WiFi. But I guess there's a whole security issue there as well.
