My Garmin Nuvi 50 lm is not showing certain towns in Missouri. both towns that I have tried are not listed in the alphabetical order of the cities and towns in Missouri. I have downloaded new maps through Garmin Express and even hard crashed my GPS with the same issues. Any suggestions on improving this issue.
Give us a couple of examples so we can check it on our devices. That may help determine if it is a problem just with your device or a map problem.
Are you looking at the map or typing in the town's name?
You might have to zoom in to see.
Or the town is actually part of a larger city, and is simply considered by the main name.
Otherwise, offer some examples as per alanb. That will allow us to test on another model.
Also try looking for the town using basecamp.
I agree you need to start with alandb's and GPSgeek's questions.
Just to confirm, can you tell us what/how you find:
-when looking for a city, do you tap WhereTo, Categories, [scroll down as needed], Cities, [enter city name in Search]? If not, how are you doing a city search?
-please confirm your current map. Tap Settings, Map&Vehicle, [scroll down as needed], myMaps. What do you see in myMaps and are they checked or unchecked? The reason for asking this is due to the nuvi 50's limited amount of memory:
If you didn't agree during the recent map update to storing the map on a SD card, you will have less than all the Lower 48 states or US&Canada (the two options available when buying a nuvi 50)—and if you selected a map update of less than your full map, you could have ended up with a map missing MO which will result in not finding any cities in a state not part of your map.
PS: Welcome to The Factory. Stick around, there's a lot of good advice and more available here!
One thing I noticed in your comment is that you referred to alphabetical list of cities. I don't have a nuvi 50, but on my 3 nuvi's when I select cities for my search, the list isn't in alphabetical order, but ordered by distance from my search point (normally my current position). There may be a way to display them alphabetically, but I can't find it.
I'm sure that my knowledge of the Garmin GPS is way behind what the other posters said.
But a long time ago I too wondered about the listings
As alandb alludes, anything in the Garmin is listed by distance from wherever you are at that point in time, Waypoints, POI's etc.
Wasn't there a post from Garmin a few years back that they eliminated some small towns due to some size limitation of >50 people or it would not search as a town.... or such?
I seem to remember something about that, and I encountered that later that year when we visited some folks in ARK, and we tried to search for an abandoned town on the Garmin 660, and Garmin couldn't find it by it's name... It would display the roads at the location of the (Un-Named) Town, but would not search or label it as a town...
Anybody remember that?
By distance on NUVI2555LMT & NUVI350
Similar to the quote below, my nuvi50lm has quit finding cities in MO and AR. They are in the “search list” but I can enter an address since it doesn’t find them in the address list. I’m currently on the road, so can’t update anything. And, will soon be out of cell range so no Google Maps either. Anyone have suggestions?
As Alandb asked of the OP, could you give us a couple of examples?
The Garmin search for towns is done inside the GPS. There is no connection to a powerful central server similar to Google Maps. Unlike Google, you must enter the name of the place spelled correctly the way it is in the Garmin map. With Google, an inaccurate search is usually successful. The Google server is aware of thousands of mistaken searches by previous users.
For example, I searched Garmin using the address of a bed and breakfast in Jamesport, NY and came up with nothing. Jamesport is a hamlet in the Town of Riverhead. When I searched for the same address in Riverhead, it came up.
If you list the towns you are talking about, we will search for them in our Garmin GPSs and report back how the search finally worked.
My gut feeling is that the OP is NOT around. He (or She) posted the problem in July and has not responded since.
Seems to me that a lot of "newbies" post problems here and then everybody jumps in to help, but the help seems to fall on deaf ears. Not nice at all.
@KenSny ... The responses are for the post by new member Joamazeme who just posted the problem today.
Stick around Joamazeme, and the helpful members here will help you find an answer to your question.
