Garmin GPS recommendation for Uber driving

What Garmin model would be good for a Uber driver, but not be really expensive? It would be used mainly in the suburbs with limited use of freeways and toll roads, but would be used in gated community areas. It also would be used for restaurants, businesses and medical offices and hospitals.

almost any

Almost any of the units offered will work as they all use the same map data which is really what you are asking about.

Agree

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42527 although I think phranc meant door to door rather than logical wink

Speaking of door to door, a question that comes up every now and then is why map updates are so much bigger now than they were a few years ago. I wonder if door-to-door addressing is responsible for a substantial portion of the filesize growth. It seems to me that D2D (I just invented this Garmin TLA! ...not to be confused with its other meanings), in the areas covered by D2D, would require identifying each street address lat/long in the map file, then associating it with the actual address number. Since the map file with updates is the same regardless of the features that can be accessed by the many series and models of Garmin devices, the filesize growth even affects those with older devices that still use logical addressing.

Of course, there are many other features that add to map file size or to other files updated when performing a map update.

Any thoughts on this?

Honestly, there are more and more streets as more and more houses are built. More roads, streets, addresses, all take up more and more space.

Door-to-door (external point addressing)

I am sure you are right CraigW in that the door-to-door data has contributed to the increasing download volume for map updates. I think this data is in one of the .SID files (called external point addressing) rather than the .IMG file. If that is the case, folks with older devices (without door-to-door feature) wouldn't download this data.

I suspect the active lane guidance is one of the main factors in the increasing size of the .img file.

Door-to-door model upgrade

According to the link by sussamb, my nuvi 245LM does not have the D2D feature. To upgrade, would I need to purchase a model with a nuvi number greater than 2450, or is it not that simple; ie, do I need to look at model by model to determine which ones have D2D?

2400 series

@SkywayTraveler ... the 2400 series is listed in that FAQ with models having the door to door addressing. Your 2540 is in that series, so it should have it. What files do you have in the /.system/.SID folder?

2598 - For Clarity's Sake

Read charlesd45's faq on door-to-door addressing, and it's still not crystal clear to me whether the nuvi 2598 uses dtd navigation or not. In the faq, he lists several 2500 models as using dtd. Does this include the entire 2500 series (ie the 2598)?

I notice he also states that units "preloaded with maps other than North America use logic addressing instead of point addressing". I'm gonna make a big leap here and postulate that since my (2598) was purchased in the U.S. (north american market), that this also indicates it uses dtd navigation. Is this about right?

Not intending to run this right into the ground here, just want to make sure I have this right. Thanks.

Yes.

@Reddawgg ... Yes, I would say your 2598 is included in the 2500 series. Again, I think the point addressing data is in one of the .SID files contained in the /.system/SID folder.
