Recent software updates for nuvi 2757 LMT

Hello All,

It's been a long time since I was last active, but am diving in again.

About 1.5 weeks ago I hooked up the GPS unit noted in the subject and Garmin Express told me that there was a software update and a map update. The software update downloaded and applied in less than 3 minutes while the maps take hours (on DSL speeds) as per usual.

What was not usual, though, is that the device itself would turn off and become disconnected from Garmin Express while the download was taking place. Then, even if you restarted the computer, Garmin Express, and the unit itself my computer would not recognize the GPS unit anymore. This occurred on two separate machines in my house.

Last night I decided to try again using a third machine. Well, Lo and behold!, the unit received not one, but two software updates one after the other followed by a successful update to the maps this morning.

Did anyone else experience something like this and was the first software update of 1.5 weeks ago something that hosed the GPS unit's "stay awake" feature when connected to a computer for updates?

I have not yet reconnected the unit to the other two machines that had stopped recognizing it, but will probably do so just to see if it is recognized again and whether it stays in the mode necessary for Garmin Express to keep interacting with it for more than 15 minutes, which was about the length of time it remained on before turning off when attached by USB to the computer.

Well ...

Are you sure it was the nuvi turning off, or was the computer shutting down the usb ports, which resulted in the nuvi then having no external power so shutting down?

Yes, I am positive it was

Yes, I am positive it was the nuvi turning off.

None of my computers is set up to shut off USB ports ever (when they're running, anyway).

This was the most bizarre thing I've ever encountered in a very long time of using Garmin GPS-es. I started out with an IQue, had (and still have) a nuvi 755T, and the nuvi 2757 LMT.

I did not have the corresponding problem with the 755T, hence the reason I ask. I've never seen one of these units turn itself off when connected via USB to a computer prior to this brief period after a software upgrade was applied (and before the last two were applied less than 2 weeks later).

I'm just really curious if this was one of those "only me" situations or if others encountered it, too. I'm suspicious because I've never seen Garmin update unit software three times in rapid succession like this.

Depleted battery

I agree with sussamb that the computer could have gone to sleep during the update. If it is a Windows PC, go into Control Panel/Power Options and change "Put computer to sleep" to "Never."

It may also be that the GPS battery discharged during the long update process. Computer USB ports do not supply enough current to both run the GPS and charge the battery at the same time. Charge the GPS for several hours before the update with a Garmin wall charger, or one with at least a 1.0 amp capacity.

Electricity needed

The software update was done three times because it failed the first two times.

We help many members on this forum whose map update doesn't go as expected. Some blame supposed bugs in Garmin Express, the software update, or the map. It is my opinion that many failed updates are caused by a lack of power.

battery shouldn't deplete

The gps is connected to a usb port during a download, which should actually be charging the battery.

load exceeds supply

The current carrying capacity of a PC USB port is 0.5 A. If the battery is significantly discharged, the load for charging the battery, plus running the GPS throughout the update, could exceed the current capacity of the PC USB port. If the load is more than 0.5 A, the voltage will sag and the GPS could turn itself off.

Well, partially discharged

Well, partially discharged or not it doesn't explain the behavior, exhibited repeatedly, after I was absolutely certain that the unit was fully charged when trying this on two different machines.

I have never had another unit fail to stay alive strictly from the power supplied by a USB port. The 2757 even dims its own display after it's been hooked up for Garmin Express when it's fully charged after a few minutes to conserve power.

I also know how to monitor software updates and have seen them fail. None of the updates to the unit software failed. Each explicitly had messages stating the update had completed successfully and the next move was to download maps. The only difficulty was with updating the maps, which mysteriously disappeared, as did the "automatic shutoff" of the unit after today's software update. I've been applying updates on various Garmin units for somewhere near to 15 years now and am intimately familiar with the process, both when it succeeds normally and fails "normally."

I can chalk up virtually anything to a fluke, and perhaps this was since no one else has chimed in with a similar experience.

What it wasn't was the result of hooking up a discharged unit for updating, at least it wasn't on all attempts except, possibly, the first.

As an aside, all my computers have power setup to remain "always on" when they are plugged in, and all are plugged in at any time a Garmin map update is needed because with my DSL download speeds these can take hours to complete.

connected device shutting down

If you have a AC USB charger or a powered USB hub, it would be interesting to see if the Garmin device drops out or loses connection when connected to these devices. This test might help you determine if the problem is tied to the Garmin or your computer USB.

It could be that the USB

It could be that the USB port you are using doesn't supply enough power. My computer has four USB 2.0 ports, and the only USB port that lets Garmin Updater properly recognize my Garmin devices is a port in the back called Powered USB connector.

Powered USB ports can supply more than the 500mA regular USB ports provide.

Check your computer's user manual and see if there is a USB port labelled Powered USB. Plug the Garmin into that port and see if that works fine.

updated map

Updated the map today. No GPS software update needed. Garmin Express needed an update first. It was uneventful.
