Map updated, yet GE reports 660 still needs Map update

I did the latest map upgrade on SD Card for my 660, and afterward the new map works good, but GE still says I have yet to update map.....
Though I have.....

Seeing that after I download map onto SD Card, I have to re-name the 3 map names, in order to have them work from the SD card.....
When I do put that SD Card back in the computer (Yes it has the Garmin directory and HDML Code for the 660 ID and Serial number)....
Seeing that the map names have been changed, will it download map a second time (In order to make GE Happy, and not think that I've let may map updates lapse......)....
OR.....
Will it seen the re-named map update and just update itself?????

SD card is either 8 or 16GB, so there is room.....

I plan on trying this in a week or so-- 660 is being used by neighbor right now...

What do you think will happen???

Well ...

... the nuvi 660 is a model where Express will not recognise the sd card, so I suspect you'll continually see the 'you need to update map' message, I suggest you just ignore it.

@sussamb,

You are right. But the main problem is caused by the 2Gb map size limit of the 660. GE only sees the partial map on the main unit and does not see the other part on the SD card. GE has been telling me to update "Southern US & Mexico" for the past several updates. Since it is only 1.49Gb, I figured that one out pretty easily.

Still, Garmin needs to make GE recognize the SD card and make it a little more friendly to older units, such as the 660.

Edit: Maybe on the next map release I'll install the southern US & Mexico on the main unit and put the Northern US and Canada on the SD card. BUT, then GE will tell me to update Northern US & Canada. LOL

Garmin Express

My impression is that Garmin Express accesses the GarminDevice.xml file to determine what is installed, the versions, file names and their location. It "SHOULD" be able to use that information to know what updates are available or needed without actually looking for individual files or folders on the device or SD card. So as long as you have restarted your device and reconnected to the computer after moving and renaming the map, GarminDevice.xml should have the correct version, file name and location information. and Garmin Express "SHOULD" know that and not prompt for the update again.

I said "SHOULD" because we have seen many cases reported where Express seems to get confused and will show an available update that has already been applied. Go figure.

It is certainly possible considering the age of the 660 and the fact that it has been years since it has received any software updates, that the 660 does not put the correct or complete information in GarminDevice.xml for Express to know what it has.

Up till the last Map, GE has

Up till the last Map, GE has always realized when a map was updated, and removed the prompt indicating new map was available..., .
When doing this, we install SD card with Garmin Directory and xml only in laptop.... That is far faster than USBV1 for data transfer!
It has only been this last Map update where GE said map wasn't updated after map was updated...

I will try exposing the SD Card & xml file to GE when 660 returns!!!
Then we'll all know!! smile!
